Getting rid of Gags who need a 2nd line C is the only way I can see that. Maybe Retained Salary from the Hawks who apparently in desperate need of one might anti up. They are looking at getting rid of Versteeg according to their fan base.
Versteeg (cap relief) and a 1st for retained salary Gagner? - DDM-Coga

I think so, seems like the Hawks have soured on him since they thought they would be getting 2010 Versteeg who can play Top 6.
On the hawks now, he doesnt beat out Shaw, Saad, or Kruger |

Oh, so like the typical fck hole Avs fan that you are, youre saying Versteeg isnt good enough for Chicago, but could just walk on to our sh!t assed team? |

Yeah, I just felt like over reacting and lashing out at the poor guy. Probably my favorite non-Oilers poster. Maybe 2nd behind Whipper. |

I dont think they would even care. The guy is old as the hills. Your plan sucks. |

So what happened between Iggy and Rutts that caused them to be such downers? |

Horrible plan. Plus what happens when he accepts our offer? Either we sign him and we're (frank)ed or we back out of a verbal agreement and get a worse rep around the league. Either way your plan is (frank)ed! |

Iggy pulled out, spit on his back, and when Rutts turned around he took a blast of goo in the face. I guess he didn't really appreciate it. |

Oh wow, I can't believe I missed this
It's true, the Oilers have the excuse of mere incompetence for the past year or so, since Mactavish inherited an awful mess and has done a decent enough job, all things considered. It should be clear to everyone that, as you say, they never intended to be picking in the top 3 again this year. Not a great excuse, but that being said, it's pretty difficult to deny that the Tambellini regime had absolutely zero strategy other than tanking, so it's fun to see it called out publicly (even if it is beating a dead horse at this point).
It's the #1 idiot fan misconception about tanking - that it's anything other than a last-gasp strategy when you have literally no other options (ie. you've run out of good players to sell off, your team is haemorrhaging money, you wait too long to rebuild, etc). No team in the NHL ever actually CHOOSES to tank for several years on end, it's usually forced on them by financial constraints and/or utter front office incompetence. The Tambellini Oilers might be the one exception to that rule, however. |

I would love to see an interview done with Tambo on his time spent here and see who was really calling the shots him or Lowe. |
