Mason Raymond was a guy Flyers are also reportedly looking at. He has the speed not so sure of the skill though - xShoot4WarAmpsx
He'd be interesting with Schenn & Simmonds |

No Laughton? - hereticpride
No he's better off playing in the minors where he will get sufficient ice time to improve his game, he will learn nothing getting 5-8 mins a game. |

He's a little soft, but he was one of the few Maple Leafs who was consistent last season and he would be an interesting guy with Couturier.
He can really skate, too

Or not repeating the mistakes, at the very least. - Jsaquella
Exactly. Holmgren did some good things as Flyers GM. Not denying that one bit. Constantly trading away draft picks for the rental bandaids is bad business. |

Moulson has struggled badly to fit in with the Wild, and he's not a fast skater at all. I'd like to inject more speed than he brings - Jsaquella

I would really hate for Laughton to be wasted on the fourth line, he's better off in minors actually getting ice time - xShoot4WarAmpsx
I don't think he would be wasted on the 4th line. 8-10 minutes a game at the NHL level, is better then playing in the AHL. The only way I want him in the AHL, is if it looks like he's not ready for the NHL in camp.

Even if he wasn't, that series shows what happens when you depend upon guys who are below-average skaters -- you have to be so good in every other area to make up for it, and most guys just aren't |

Not particularly good at handling/distributing the puck, though. |

Agreed -- his finishing/puck skills aren't amazing, but neither are a guy like Simmonds.
The value of Raymond is the speed, and he can score 20 goals in a secondary role. A player like Couturier, I feel, can have the game opened up a little for him by guys who can skate and backcheck, so he doesn't have to expend all of his energy trying to beat guys or track them down

To me, it would be a bit of a Geoff Sanderson move... team speed a problem, go out and get the guy who has a rocket in his ass. I'm just not sold on his ability to contribute in all facets... he's like Matt Read without all the usefulness. |

As far as Holmgren & Hextall go, it's pretty obvious that it was a McCammon situation.
Back in the early 1980s, the Flyers were very high on Bob McCammon as a rising young hockey mind. He was coach, and they felt he'd be a good GM, when Keith Allen was ready to hang 'em up. But, McCammon got offered a job as GM & Head Coach(believe it was the Whalers, but not sure), so in order to keep McCammon, Snider promoted him to GM & head coach and kicked Allen upstairs.
Pretty similar to Hexy & Homer. Plan was in place, and the heir apparent drew interest from elsewhere, so the succession plan was sped up a bit. - Jsaquella
Yikes
I hope it works out better than the McCammon era!
His drafting was solid, but his coaching was pretty weak |

Every player on the team isn't going to be like Matt Read. And if the investment is small, nothing wrong with taking a low risk chance on a player.

I think you're underselling him a little bit -- Sanderson, to me, put up numbers on bad hockey clubs.
Raymond's played for good teams, with good players, under a good coach in Alain Vigneault. I'm more concerned with his toughness than anything -- he's got hockey sense, too.

Just never liked him personally, and I'm wary of his underlying metrics... he also notorious for an annual disappearing act during mid-January when the pressure and degree of difficulty starts ratcheting up, part of the reason why the 'Nucks let him go and he had trouble finding a job last summer. |

The back injury played a role in that, but it does say something that his former GM brought him in and he was able to produce under a guy like Carlyle -- again, metrics matter, but at the same time, production does too.

Since they can't really afford to spend too much on a winger, with there being higher priorities and all, I'm exclusively looking at guys who had bad years who I can get for the same kind of $1M value that Raymond went for last summer.
Setoguchi, Moss, Kulemin, Comeau or taking a chance on a guy like Miele. |

Ugh -- I feel about Setoguchi like you feel about Raymond. Think Moss won't really help good teams, think Miele's simply too small to help in the playoffs.
Kulemin would be a great "get," but he's gonna cost. Comeau...at times I've liked his game, at times I've wondered whether his heart was in it.
If it were possible, though, I certainly think one of those two could help. |

Big fan of Kulemin and Comeau -- can play anywhere in the top-9 and contribute physically, defensively and offensively.
Matt Calvert is the guy I really want, but CMB probably ain't giving him up to us. |
