Man Phaneuf vs. Lecavalier?
Christ this board is glutton for punishment. - Pixote Andolini
Phaneuf actually fills a pressing need, though. Lecavalier was just another "Ohhhh Shiny!" deal |

Yup, that's what I was thinking, too. Of course, had Mason been in for game one, it's a different dynamic.
Not faulting Emery. You can't start back up for three games and expect to be up 2-1 in the playoffs. - Jsaquella

He's a top pair defenseman that can play on the PP & PK, move the puck adequately and provides physicality.
He's not the second coming of Pronger, which is unfortunately how Toronto uses him |

And paid like him, too. He's a top-pair guy who's paid like an elite guy.
Yes, he would fill some needs, but he'd also fill a large part of our cap as well (damn you, Canadian dollar!) I'd prefer a one-year stopgap, even the much-hated Kimmo Timonen if he'd take $3-$4M for one more year, and see if one of Alt/Ghost can punch a ticket into the top-4. |

You're flagged.
Also...so, apparently, writers can have bannable words printed in their columns (i.e. "The S Word" in Ryan Wilson's blog today)??? |

There's other routes I'd definitely prefer, but I wouldn't be pissed if they landed Phaneuf, either. The big issue is cost. Leafs won't trade him cheaply and probably won't pick up any cash at all.
I'd definitely prefer Phaneuf at $7mm than Andrew MacDonald at $5mm |

Flyers should do:
Mark Streit
2016 1st round pick
2014 2nd round pick
2015 2nd round pick
2016 2nd round pick
for
Olli Maata
Worked just fine for me last night on NHL 14. |

Phaneuf is signed far to long for me to touch that contract. I'd be interested if it was 4-5 years, and if the Leafs were willing to eat about 1.5 mill of his salary.
But 7mill for 7 years? I dont care if they DO take Vinny in that deal, Phaneuf just isn't that good. |

That's where it breaks down. From a strictly adding Phaneuf angle, he'd help. \
I mean, adding Shea Weber, PK Subban or Sidney Crosby would help too. It depends on the cost. Obviously, if the price for Phaneuf is B.Schenn and a 1st, you walk away. |

I'd take it, if they took Vinny and his contract, without other assets, I'd do it in a heartbeat. |

Phaneuf is terribly overrated. He is their #1 Dman but their Defense is horrible.
He is a 2-3 guy. The 7 year term and money is scary. I do not want him. No heart, makes a lot of mistakes, and for 7 years at 7 million. I would rather look elsewhere.
He does take too much heat here in Toronto ( as everyone does) but I could see the Sharks going after him. They want to shake things up and need D help

All guys I would take before Phaneuf if given the choice; players in bold aren't even arguable IMO.
Leafs would have to eat AT LEAST 1.5 if not 2 mill of his salary for me to take on Phaneuf for 7 (frank)ing years. It'd be different if he was 25. He'll be 36 when his deal is done. |

Pens/Rags going to game 7? Guess the flyers aren't as horrible as it seemed. Still have obvious needs and lacking in certain areas, but with the right tweaks the team could be much better, very quickly, IMO. |

Phaneuf is still seen as that kid who was good for 15+ goals/45+ points who throws Earth-shattering hits in his early years. He's a shadow of the player now. |

Bottom line for me is he is paid like an elite player for the foreseeable future, and is nowhere near being an elite defender.
Leafs would have to take Vinny's contract and eat close to 2 mill of Phaneufs, making the salaries close to a wash.
Why they would do that I have NO IDEA, but then again, were talking about the Leafs.

Their team defense is horrible. They get outshot badly and get hemmed in their own end. I don't think Phaneuf is helped by that or by being the captain.
I do think he's a legit top pair guy, and a number one defenseman. I don't think he's elite, but he's still good and would easily be the Flyers best defenseman, despite his deficiencies. |
