All guys I would take before Phaneuf if given the choice; players in bold aren't even arguable IMO.
Leafs would have to eat AT LEAST 1.5 if not 2 mill of his salary for me to take on Phaneuf for 7 (frank)ing years. It'd be different if he was 25. He'll be 36 when his deal is done. - mochoson
I've taken the liberty of bolding players who could be had for a price equal to or less than Phaneuf. Makes "the choice" a little more sparse. |

Phaneuf at $7m vs. MacDonald at $5m and losing BSchenn + Hagg or some other combination of serious assets. - Feanor
Can we just trade AMac and VL to them for Phaneuf? |

Their team defense is horrible. They get outshot badly and get hemmed in their own end. I don't think Phaneuf is helped by that or by being the captain.
I do think he's a legit top pair guy, and a number one defenseman. I don't think he's elite, but he's still good and would easily be the Flyers best defenseman, despite his deficiencies. - Jsaquella
I'm in total agreement with you. Judging by past discussions, I may be the only one around here who is. |

And how many of those listed are available? You're listing some elite level guys there. I mean, sure I'd rather have Ryan Suter or Ryan McDonagh over Phaneuf. Of course, i'd rather have Suter over anyone in the NHL...but it's not gonna happen
There's quite a few on that list I'd take Phaneuf over. Trevor Daley? He's not nearly as good as Phaneuf. Sekera? Really? Josi & Hamhuis are solid guys, but I think Phaneuf is better than both. |

Forgive me, I am just as big a Stars fan as I am a Flyers fan. But yes, I would argue that although they are completely different players, Phaneuf and Daley are just about equal in contributions to their teams.
Sekera, Josi, and Hamhuis I take over Phaneuf 7 days a week, no questions asked.
The list was more about putting into perspective where Phaneuf sits among the rest of the better Dmen in the NHL. Yet, he will be tied with Doughty for the 4th highest salary among players at the position once his extension kicks in.
Toronto will try to sell him on his name alone; praying the Flyers dont bite. He's just not that good. |

Phaneuf is a horrible idea, unless the leafs wants to take back 2 mil or so in salary, IMO. We are shedding timonens big hit and trying to dump VL and I'd rather not fill the void with phaneuf's contract for the next 7 years.
Also, would TO trade him in the first year of his 7 year contract? I thought that was a flyers thing. |

I'd like to stress, that being open to Phaneuf as a possible trade option is not the same as saying, "Sweet Jumping (frank), we HAVE to get Phaneuf in here NOW!!"
I don't dismiss adding him, for the right cost, because he'd be an improvement over the current roster. He's got warts-inconsistent, loses positioning to make a big hit, not as productive as he once was offensively-and a big contract.
But any top pair defenseman is going to have a big contract. It's unavoidable. Sure there's better players and better options. But I'm just saying I'd be open to adding Phaneuf. |

Phanuef plays first pair, faces the toughest competition in the NHL, eats a ton of minutes and still does a solid job. Trevor Daley is a decent 2nd pair guy. Give me Phaneuf, every time.
Sekera is similar, IMO to Daley. Solid guy, but not a top pair guy by any stretch.
I like Josi a lot, but he doesn't have the body of work and I'm not sold he'll ever be more than a good second fiddle. Hamhuis, again, is really a nice number 3 defenseman not a top pair guy.
As far as cap hit, yeah, it's high. But when PK Subban signs for $8.3mm this summer, and other defensemen reach free agency, it will not be as high vs the top guys in the league. |

Because they have a new guy running the show. They kept Nonis, Poulin and Loiselle, as well as Carlyle and need to make some changes.
So rather than fire the GM who gave a ton of cash to a winger the team didn't really need and traded assets for a goalie that didn't fill a primary need...they'll trade a guy they mis-used and overpaid.

Leaf nation would be in their glory if they got rid of Phaneuf. Not many want him here for 7 years. I would rather trade for a Daley and sign a Niskanen than make any trade for Phaneuf. I do realize a Grossman or someone else would have to be moved. I have just seen too much of Phaneuf and IMO better value for the 7 million can be found elsewhere - Jsaquella |

PK Subban at 7-years, $63M > Phaneuf at 7-years, $49M.
Unrealistic, but that would probably get him to sign an O.S. |

- Mason, Giroux, Ghost, Morin, Hagg untouchable (barring crazy offer).
- B Schenn + unnamed package (2nd + Leier???) for one of Carlson/Alzner (pillage that team now)
- Bring back Pro Beach Hockey
- Move Grossmann for picks, 3-way battle between Ghost/Alt/Lauridsen
- JS Giguere backup
Plan the parade...for 2016. |

No way, we all know the Web Warriors are the real deal.
There's no good pro/semi-pro roller leagues any more. I played 2 seasons for the Riot in MLRH, but they went out west and it's a joke now. |
