Whatever makes a better product on the ice is favorable, but I do like the purity of just a bunch of guys playing hockey and not banging my head against endless statistics.

I understand that some people get into that. But advanced stats drove me away from baseball. And I'm hoping (and expecting) that it will be just a side dish in hockey. The game is too fast and too compelling to require a degree in statistics to enjoy it.

Agreed. Baseball is a sport that warrants a lot of stats, but I don't think we need it in hockey in order to enjoy it. If others are into it, that's great for them and they may even have more insight into the game because of it, but the added benefit doesn't justify the need to me, from a fan's point of view.

For guys that love stats, have at it! (And if you could, make me aware of anything interesting )

I wouldn't say it drove me away from baseball, but it does make baseball discussion a little less passionate and a little more "what stat do you subjectively believe in the most". I'm not interested in that discussion.

I don't think hockey will ever take on baseball's relationship with numbers if only because of the individual nature of how baseball is played as opposed to hockey where who you are playing and the element of luck does matter.

I really like how advanced stats make you look at the game differently and it's still possible to ignore them and still really enjoy the game for what it is.

I've been pretty critical of BSchenn, but I don't want him traded.

And I definitely don't want to trade BSchenn to create room for Vinny. I'd rather them trade Vinny, get pennies on the dollar, and burn a pile of Ed Snider's money as opposed to trading BSchenn at this point of his career.

I agree that the relationship between the numbers and what happens on the field might not be so 1-for-1, but I think the value of stats could be even greater in hockey for the simple reason that the eye simply can't track all 12 players + the puck at the same time. You kind of need something to fill in the gaps left by what your eyeballs understandably missed.

Indeed. I want them to use everything they can to evaluate and monitor. I just don't need to know every guy's triglyceride level to enjoy the game.

The problem with MAF is that 1) he's actually not playing TOO poorly, and 2) unless they wanna pay Miller, their best choice would be to roll with Zatkoff as their #1.

That team is in a win-now mode. They need answers and quick. So MAF is basically their guy.

I think that's interesting but would disagree. There are a number of things that you can't measure that are keys to management, not just in sports but in any area. Desire, commitment, determination, willingness to challenge yourself, ability to accept and overcome adversity--none of those is measurable but all are things you can coach and that make an employee more suited for some roles than others may be.

The league has enabled Milan Lucic for most of his career in his behavior. Why stop now?
