Briere got CBO'd...
You're also talking to someone who never liked the signing in the first place, for the aforementioned reasons. - Tomahawk
You didn't like the Briere signing? Really?? |

Hated it.
They didn't show enough faith in Richie and Carts development. Just like they panicked again and didn't show enough faith in Schenn/Coots. Nothing wrong with hedging bets and bringing in a little bit of insurance, but not to the tune of 5-7 year contracts that put them tight against cap, for old one-way players. |

I think they showed more than enough faith in their development. Neither at the time had any kind of break out yet. Richards I don't think ever was expected to do any of the things he ended up doing in the best years of his career. Either way, both players played well here and Danny Briere never held them back from anything. |

Maybe the Flyers can get Les Habs to trade Briere for Vinny - Jsaquella
Heck I'd do that in a second, at least Briere has only 1 year left on his deal |

Having $6.5M of the cap tied up in a superfluous player did help drive them into a number of their more notable mistakes, like Gagne->Walker and Upshall->Carcillo and not having the $ available to re-up guys like Carle and Jagr. If they don't get rid of VL soon, they'll be faced with similar scenarios in the future. |

They wouldn't have done poop in the playoffs without Briere. He raised his game while Carter disappeared each season. |

I wasn't upset about Briere. This team was desperate for offense. Our top line was like Upshall-Carter- Umberger at the end of that season.
The VL deal is different because the team already HAS a #1 center who produces points. They had the ability to be more patient.
I don't think many people expected Richards to become an 80 point player. |

That's wise and I agree here. I think Hextall views Lecav in the same way, based on some of his soundbites. |

Carts and Richie were really starting to come along, and didn't they still have Gagne and Knuble to rely upon? |

So I was bored today and decided to play a little armchair GM and came up with this. Let me know what you guys think. Defense is still suspect but as I said before, I don't think it's all that terrible. And I don't really see many things to be done with it until the kids are ready to make the jump.
FORWARDS
Matt Moulson ($4.000m) / Claude Giroux ($8.275m) / Jakub Voracek ($4.250m)
Scott Hartnell ($4.750m) / Brayden Schenn ($2.500m) / Wayne Simmonds ($3.975m)
Jason Akeson ($1.000m) / Sean Couturier ($1.750m) / Matt Read ($3.625m)
Michael Raffl ($1.100m) / Scott Laughton ($0.863m) / Zac Rinaldo ($0.750m)
Adam Hall ($0.600m)
DEFENSEMEN
Kimmo Timonen ($4.000m) / Braydon Coburn ($4.500m)
Mark Streit ($5.250m) / Nicklas Grossmann ($3.500m)
Luke Schenn ($3.600m) / Andrew MacDonald ($5.000m)
GOALTENDERS
Steve Mason ($4.100m)
Ray Emery ($1.000m)
LTIR
Chris Pronger ($4.941m)
RETAINED SALARIES (1.58% of upper limit)
Vincent Lecavalier ($1.125m—25.00%)
------
CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS (follow @capgeek on Twitter)
(estimations for 2014-15)
SALARY CAP: $71,100,000; CAP PAYROLL: $69,513,333; BONUSES: $212,500
CAP SPACE (21-man roster): $1,586,667 - Roytastic
Would be good except the team would be 4 mill over the cap. Pronger can't be put on LTIR until the season starts and we must be cap compliant before the season starts. |

I think the ultimate dilemma is Ed's need to win now. It may have been better for the team to be patient, but their aggressiveness did produce Hartnell and Timonen as well. It's hard to argue with those acquisitions. |

Man. Shame he didn't work out. He was pretty touted wasn't he? ....imagine if he actually developed into a top 4 defenseman? That whole Forsberg/1st round flip ordeal would have been on par with ripping off Columbus |

Definitely can't argue w/ Hartsy/Kimmo... that was Homer at his crazy/outside-the-box best, trading for rights and all.
Seems like anytime something bad happens, they severely over-correct. Miss the PO's... throw $$$ at Briere. Lose to the Crosby in the 1st-round... trade the farm for Pronger/fire Stevens. Goaltending implodes in PO's... get Bryzgalov. Miss the PO's again... Streit + Vinny/fire Lavi.
Forget patient, there's no continuity or long term plan at all. |

I know
They could have turned Forsberg into a top pairing dman, top 4 dman and top 6 forward. |

Sharks are moving on from Boyle. I have confidence Hexy won't bring kimmo back. He is done. It should not be his choice. I don't know if berube is just saying it to be nice but it concerns me if he wants him back which I thought is what kimmo said |

Thats always been my issue. They always think they're one move away from the cup.
They're so good at drafting in the first round. I wish they wouldn't give up those picks. |

Jagr did rebound. He left the NHL and was playing somewhere else for an extended period of time. Three years later he came here. He wasn't 100 percent as a Flyer. He was benched and had to sit out plenty and his numbers were only okay. He went to Dallas, Boston and New Jersey where he's played much better. Lecavalier could be viewed the same way. Lecavalier has had to adjust coming out of Tampa where he's played his entire career, the same comparison can be made to Jagr. It's a totally different style of Hockey overseas. - SuperSchennBros
Jagr had a 71 point season in his last year before going to the KHL. He didn't leave the NHL because he was ineffective, he went for money.
When he missed time as a Flyer, he was injured. They didn't healthy scratch him for poor play, he was dealing with injuries. Came back over to a more physical league after 3 year absence, with a longer schedule, yeah there will be more adjustment than changing teams in the same league. |

Boyle looked cooked in the playoffs. I advocated signing him earlier in the year, but he looked as done as Kimmo. Pass. |

If Kimmo retires, I'd be interested in Boyle on a 1-2 year term. He was basically used exactly like Kimmo was this year, and played particularly well in the PO's. |
