And FWIW, it's not out of the realm of possibility that, not only will he see more ice time, but he might even make more money. - johndewar
Yup, it's extremely possible. |

How much ice time does he need? You play with what yuor given. If h showed enough to the Flyers they would have made an offer for him to stay. You have to make the most of your chance and he didn't. Mason only had 7 gaesat the end of last year to make his chance. He played well in camp and ook wht happened. If he didn't play well he would have been sitting behind emery - J35Bacher
Two words: Andrej Meszaros. He was making an inordinate amount of money and he HAD to play so they could try to dump him (as they did).
Also, defensemen need ice time to develop. It's simple. He wasn't getting it here. |

For him, right now, it is the better option.
He needs consistent ice time even to give other teams something to see. The 29 other teams did not exactly see a full body of work at the NHL level in order to make a judgement on the guy. - johndewar
Some guys only get a few games to show what you've got and you have to make the best of it or it can pass you by. Not many places in this world where you get repeated looks until you finally pan out to where people hoped you'd be |

And if he looks ready later, give him another shroud. Right now he looks like an average player to me. You can sit on either side the fence, but I don't think it changes what he is right now. I'm not ruling out his potential, just that it doesn't pain me to see him go, especially if hextall has a plan for the defense. - funmaster18
I do understand what you're saying, as well, but the history of the NHL, of pro sports, just means that taking the word of scouts just...it's fraught with peril.
They're just not right nearly as much as people want to believe. They're just not, in any sport. They are extremely dedicated, they work hard, they have a thankless job, in some respects.
But man. The history of pro sports is littered with guys who don't get a shot with one team because the consensus is that the guy couldn't play, and then that very guy goes on to become a player. Happens all the time, in all the sports.

I'm not anti gusty by any means. I thought he was a nice player that maybe could continue to get better, I'm just not up in arms that he's no longer with the team. |

I thought that is what the AHL is for? If we want to develop players then just let Ghost play as he brings more then Gus. |

Who knows why they didn't plant Gus down there some more?

And hey, I agree, can't take a scout's word that sees a guy once in a while as gospel. The scouts are not what I'm basing my opinions off of. In fact, there are probably way more instances where scouts are wrong than right |

Plus it opens a contract spot and gives the flyers a little flexibility. Put it this way. If Gus had value other teams would have tried to get him when he was sitting. They would have tried to buy low on him banking on his so called potential. I think that says a lot. |

He had a one way contract and would not have cleared waivers. |

Would all agree this is a good scouting report for Gus?
Scouting Report
Assets:
Is extremely smart, both with and without the biscuit. Moves the puck swiftly and effortlessly out of the defensive zone. Has plenty of offensive acumen (and experience) at lower levels.
Flaws:
Isn't physical enough at the highest level, and also doesn't make up for it with point production in the NHL. Won't ever be able to dominate in the big league the way he did in major junior hockey.
Career Potential:
Veteran journeyman depth defenseman.

Man, they are pissed off in Pittsburgh -- they even took the 24/48 hour cooling off period and still put the hit out on Shero

I don't revel in the misery of others -- OK, wait a minute, yeah I do, when it comes to that team and a few others -- but I did think that Shero was gonna survive it.

Ha! Perhaps contrary to popular belief, but I'd much rather debate multiple topics over the course of the day rather than slap-fight about one all day

Hearing both Bylsma and Shero are gone in Pit. Flyers still need an Asst. GM. Ray Shero anyone? Flyer ties are there obviously. |

I suggested that the other day too. Maybe if he doesn't get a shot somewhere else but I think someone will make the call. |
