Bill Meltzer: Meltzer's Musings: Worlds Update, Drafting Best Available Player - bmeltzer
I personally do not believe in the "Best Player" route. I don't believe there is one. Young players develop differently and some turn out to be better then others.
I'd like to see the Flyers go after a natural winger in the first round. I don't think we've drafted one since Claude Giroux who was a RW originally before his transition to center. Before Giroux was Steve Downie. |

Watching that's hockey on tsn. Talking Richards carter and Williams. Lol. Went on for a few minutes how the flyers should wish they still had them all. It never ends. I actually hope the kings win it. Anyone but he rangers or Habs! |

Dan Boyle not coming back to the Sharks.
Interested? - KGBflyers10
Wants a 2 year deal and probably at least 5 mill, no thanks
Would have to dump Grossman AND one of Hartnell or Lecavlier first.
I'd rather go cheaper on a guy like Ron Hainsey |

I don't want to vibe like I hate the player, but I'd rather the Flyers give one of the farmhands a shot, if even for 30 games. If a guy like Mark Alt isn't ready, then fine. Understand completely. Send him back down.
But for me, I'd rather see the Flyers do that, than give another contract to the kind of player Dan Boyle is now. We have Mark Streit, and I like him as a player. But I'd rather not get another mid-30s and above defenseman for next season. Just my opinion.

Hextall made some interesting points when he took the GM job:
He values strength at G, D and C over the wings
He wants guys who are big and fast
He wants to build from within
and
He is willing to take a step back to be more successful down the road
I could really see them doing very little in free agency, moving Vinnie and, if they can sign Rasmussen, going with a lineup like.
Hartnell-G-Jake
Raffl-Schenn-Simmonds
Read-Couturier-Akeson or Rasmussen
Rinaldo-Laughton-Akeson or Rasmussen
spare forward: Rosehill
Coburn-Streit or Grossmann
AMac-Schenn
Streit or Grossmann-Alt or Lauridsen
Spare D: journeyman UFA
Mason
Emery or UFA if Emery wants too much $$ |

If Hexy sticks to the plan he spoke of. Nope. Cant see us getting him. I want to build through keeping all picks etc. maybe we draft some more forwards and flip current young guys like Schenn for a promising young dman. That has to be hextalls goal. I watch a guy like doughty and say that's what we need but have no idea how we get a guy like that other than smart drafting. |

Yeah, I'd have no problem dropping down 10 spots if I could snag an additional 3rd both this year and next. - BiggE
It will be risky because it's impossible to predict who will be around when trading down. It may be a risk they have to take though. I don't like the idea of heading into next years draft with no 2nd or 3rd |

Hexy's looking for a player with a "big frame but a decent skater"? Sounds perhaps like a Brendan Perlini or a Alex Tuch to me. |

I hope these aren't just lines from which he strays with the slightest pressure from above.
Stand your ground, Hexy.

I think these are just in general the kind of players they wan to try to draft. If we get a smaller forward in the 1st, it won't be the end of the world. |

Personally...it wouldn't bother me at all if that's the lineup for next year. Give one of the Phantoms defensemen a chance, hope that Michael Raffl gets 15-18 goals and 40 points, and take your chances.

The other plus with that lineup is it really helps their cap situation going into 15-16.
The benefit from the new Can TV deal will effect the cap that season and barring an economic meltdown, you will be looking at ceiling of over 75 million. And, if you are looking to clear more space, Grossmann will be going into the final year of his deal and should be tradeable. Also if Ghost and/or Hagg are ready by then, they can either try to move Streit if he is agreeable, or, if he's not, buy him out.
A buyout of Streit after 14-15 would cost them:
15-16 2.458 million
16-17 4.208 million
17-18 958k
18-19 958k
While the first 2 years are painful, if he's being replaced during those years with a dman on an ELC, its really not that big a deal and would actually save them cap space in 15-16.

I don't see Hextall signing Jokinen. It sounds like the last thing he's going to do is overpay for a veteran UFA winger. |

as i said the other day....(frank)ing (frank)
but of course, as a flyer carter gets hooked down on the breakaway (w/no call) or shoots it wide, williams gets his wrist broken by a vicious slash on the rebound attempt (again, no call), and richie just does what he does (i miss the (frank)ing 'shift') |
