The Tortorella hire was just a bad hire to begin with -- the way Vancouver played wasn't the problem. The problem was Mike Gillis and his drafting -- he was horrific. The Canucks were AWFUL on draft day, for years.
They were set up for years of success, and they pissed it away in four years with awful drafting. - AllInForFlyers
Yeah, but they swindled Lou Lamoriello at last years draft. |

I think Giroux can turn Setoguchi back into a 20-30 scorer, easy. Guy can flat-out skate. Probably could be had for a decent value, too.
If this team needed a C, I'd be all over Grabo. - Tomahawk
Seto is my most interesting choice.. I think with his wheels and hands he still has what it takes to be a really good winger. Hell, adding his speed on the wing is a huge plus alone.
If we were to move Schenner I would push hard for Grabo |

See, I didn't like that deal that much -- Schneider's a good goalie, but they did get good value.
The problem with moving Schneider is that then you went ahead and moved Luongo, though they were separate deals. |

The reason I selected all of these guys is because 3/5 are around 30 and havent really had HUGE years over the past few years. They have been good players, are all capable of playing a good two way game, and would likely not get an enormous jump in pay.
We have plenty of players in the system that can do what Leino would do. Also, all of the players I listed have pretty good wheels.
If we are looking to add a fourth liner from UFA... Dominic Moore, Jay McClement, Daniel Winnick - jak521
Yeah, value is the name of the game. If I'm Hexy, I'm exclusively looking at guys who had off years, who I believe are salvageable. He's on a hamburger budget... no reason to look at the porterhouses at all. |

I think Schenn is going to get shopped at the draft. Who knows what will come of it. The fact Hextall was ok with him going to us when he was in LA tells me he won't cry if Schenn gets moved for the right price. |

I think sutter puts the puck in the net a little better than couts. Did you see his wingers this year? At least coots has read |

Laughton can play 4th line center. I'm not concerned with that. He's also played wing before in Juniors and the WJC. Guys like Schenn and Couts played center their entire careers. It's a difficult transition for those types of guys.
Certain centers translate better to wing than others. I don't agree that all centers can play wing, but certain centers can play. Most can adjust eventually like Carter did.
I believe Laughton has the skill set to play wing or center. If the Flyers can sign a 3rd line forward, they can play Laughton with Raffl on the 4th line. That will give him some skill to play with instead of having him center Hall and Rinaldo. - PhillySportsGuy
Brayden Schenn has transitioned between Wing and Center at every level of Hockey. In fact saw Schenn play wing to Couturier in the rookie game at Wells Fargo just prior to his rookie season. It's also believed that the Flyers would like to keep Laughton at center. With this said, I hope you're right that Laughton has played enough wing that maybe he can come in replace Downie instantly and possibly do a much better job. |

Setoguchi is an interesting name. I'm not sure he would help unless he played with Giroux though. He seems like the type of player who only plays well when given a #1 center. |

Yeah, don't think he's had a quality playmaker in MIN and WPG to juice the most out of his skillset.
Simmer/Giroux/Setoguchi
Hartnell/Schenn/Voracek
Akeson/Couturier/Read
Raffl/Laughton/______
That would work for me.

That's not terrible. As long as fill in the blank isn't Rinaldo or Rosehill. |

Ha! Pretty much -- wouldn't be the worst thing if they sat on their hands during FA, tried to dump a contract prior to that |

Sutter's linemates were horrible, but Couts even kept things together when he played on the 4th line with horrible linemates during his rookie season.
Sutter may be better than Couts right now, but I think it's close and I think Couts has a lot more potential. He has tremendous hands. I think it's only a matter of time before he starts to show his offensive ability. I think he needs more opportunity instead of being used solely as checking line center. |

Next year's just gonna be one of those "get it over with" kind of years, where the growth of the young players is how you measure it.
I wish I was more optimistic, but the team is better set up for 2015-16, and it'd be nice if they dumped a contract before then so they have some flexibility

Both of them make little enough money to be waived and sent to the minors with no repercussions, unless someone is stupid enough to claim them off of waivers. |

If the flyers managed to dump a contract in the off season they actually might be able to stay under the salary cap and not dive into Pronger's LTIR. Which would be a shocking miracle. Someone needs to be signed to play on defense though, either a cheap vet or a mid range solid dman type.. |
