its because the leafs lack blue chip prospects, no high end talent.
I am not overly worried about that at the moment as long as they keep the picks and prospects and keep developing.. unlike before. - senstroll
that they lack a blue chip prospect is amazing considering they consistently miss the playoffs. even the teams that make the playoffs have guys like Hertl,Mantha,Teravainen |

Thought clarkson was the grit? - DougGilmour_93
he was..and Gleason ..and Fraser, and Orr and FML
but the leafs need more..but different grit.. like different kinds of sandpaper
the kind they can never seem to find is talented grit..
(frank) it just find talent

u mean Hudler
hockeyfuture has the leafs in the bottom 3 when it comes to prospects. i know their not the be all end all on prospect rankings but thats not god for a team that consistently misses the playoffs.
and finally, Shanahan will fix all this - Jurco_28
They are listed at number 20 at HockeyFuture. Not sure where you got bottam three.

well remove Rielly and your prospect depth takes a hit...
but yes..the leafs seem to manage to be bad and not fill the cupboards with talent
Hertl taken the same draft as Rielly so if you count him for SJ..count Rielly for TO
SJ ranks 24th with Hertl |

The talented grit is hard to find because most teams dont give that up, but teams like the nucks and flames have no need for Giordano or Bieksa and those are gritty type defenders we could trade for that brings veteran presence and leadership |

So you don't see when you watch the Marlies play and the patience our management team has with the kids and let them develop? Leaf team of the past traded away the kids and draft choices. We now have a management team in place who despite fans that YELL, keep their patience and develop the players properly. It takes time to develop players but pays off in the end. - sparky
Develop into what though? What system is there for them to develop into? Why do you think Detroit made the playoffs with the AHL team? They played the same system in the minors so they stepped right into the same position for success. It's great that we let them develop but they'll be lost once they make it to the big leagues when things change on them. |

I would like Thornton but he is getting old and I feel tey would overvalue him too much. - JVR_42_PK81
not sure how Thornton is a good fit in Toronto based on where they are as an organization. |

Uhm. I would say he would slot in perfectly on that top line. But I can see your argument that the He should go to a team that is a cup faveorite. |

he'd make the Leafs way better, no doubt. but he'd certainly not come cheap. you'd be giving up some valuable young assets. but unless the Leafs feel that they will be Cup contenders for the next 2-3 years, not sure the improvement is worth it. |

You know why those teams end up with those guys? They are patient with their picks. They don't waste them moving up a few spots and allow other teams to fill their prospect pool with more chances (That's what each draftee is, a chance)
My favourite example is Anaheim. We traded up to get Percy (I believe or it was Biggs...same draft) Who did they draft with their first rounder and second rounder they got from us? Rakell (played in the playoffs with the Ducks) and Gibson who looks solid.
Patience? Burke didn't have any. |

I agree that if San Jose wants too many young assets than it's no deal but at the right price for the leafs I would do it. It would make them better and would add the vetran leadership they desperately need. It would for sure help mentor the younger players. |

patience is part of the game plan that you were talking about earlier, some teams have a very good leadership/vision/direction for their teams |
