i think it is unfair to lump macdonald in with the streit and vinny signings. - stayinthefnnet
Streit > MacDonald > Vinny
And that's from somebody who doesn't much like Streit at all. |

i think i will take amac over streit.
but my point in evaluating them is that vinny and streit are veteran, very much win now kind of guys.
should this whole 2 to 3 year plan thing be the desired route, amac can very much be a productive part of that.
actually, come to think of it, those other 2 guys will still be on the books too. just not the productive part. |

Of course, if you've accumulated a surplus of young assets/picks, you can eventually move some of those to bring in pieces to push your team over the top.
The Flyers aren't at that point yet... they have one of the emptiest cupboards in the league... - Tomahawk
Finally someone is getting what I'm saying. That's why I say yes continue to draft well to replenish but trade some pieces. In the example I gave we get eberle/ekblad we'll say and lose schenn bro + simmer. Future potential 1 and top winger. We lose some but get better by getting more elite |

Problem is, Eberle isn't elite. Neither is Ekblad/Reinhart/Bennett, as far as I can tell. |

Is Eberle really that much better than Simmonds? Is the #3 pick going to be better than both Schenn Bros combined? |

Why don't you like Striet at all? He had a strong year for the Flyers. |

I think Exblad could end up in the same realm as a guy like James Wisniewski. Thats not a bad thing, but I just dont think he is only the same level as the Doughtys and AP's of the world. |

Streit carried Grossmann for most of the season, didn't miss a game, and finished 10th in the league in ES scoring among defensemen. He turned out to be a very good signing. |

Well that I can get behind. There is no doubt that the Flyers are going to have to trade some valuable assets if the right deal presents itself. Because the waiting plan is going to take as much as 5 years, for the Flyers young defenseman to get to the point where they can be the backbone of the Flyers backline. And prime years of Giroux, Voracek, Simmonds, and Read are wasted. |

Eberle and Ekblad aren't Elite just because their names begin with E. |

Eberle with g. Come on. That's 40 goals a year. Speed and can finish. And young. Ekblad projects to a #1. I'm not saying we need hall o famers all over the roster here. Those were just examples. Many names you can plug in there. Pit min Nash la Ana pho many teams with wealth at the d position that would listen to a trade talk with the forwards we have. Just saying IMO I'd be stoked to see another trade like the excitement when pronger trade was announced. Did anyone say oh my god we just traded sbisa and lupul and some picks or did you say holy crap we got PRONGER! |

I think they took turns carrying each other. There were times in the beginning of the season, when Striet was still adjusting, that Grossmann was the player doing the carrying defensively. |

Don't like his contract when you take into consideration his age.
He finished the season well, no doubt. |

That's what I was saying earlier too this thing could take a few years. Hell stolarz might be our goalie by then. That's why I said I'd rather trade than relie on just the draft one or fa. God know what the fa market is. Crap unless it's for bottom 6 and even at that you'll overpay. |

So not liking Streit is not at all based on how he has played. But based on something that might, and I emphasize might happen in the future? Is that a fair description of why? |

He's a young 36 thanks to all those 40-something game seasons in Switzerland. |

Have to get used to the idea that the Flyers are likely going to have to overpay at some point, if they want to move the team forward, any faster then just waiting, and hoping on draft picks to develop. |

Yep. If the streit/ macdonald contracts were maybe 3 year deals fine as a bridge until ghost morin hagg get here but 5 years just keeps is in the same boat. |

Do you really expect those 3 players to do be able to handle the responsibility and roles on the team in 3 years that Streit and MacDonald currently handle? |

And the wait will be forever. Laughton will be up next year and outside of the big 3 dmen we have no top talent or even really top 6 good talent coming. So how do we improve our bottom 6 and team speed and top winger for g ? That what my mind keeps coming back to |

I'm not at all worried about the forward ranks. And you can always get good solid bottom 6 forwards by trade or free agency. I'd rather see the Flyers draft and develop them though. And there is a drat coming up in a couple of weeks to add to the talen cupboard. And the Flyers have shown that they can find some undrafted free agent gems. |

I could see Ghost and Hagg possibly handling what Streit/MacDonald do in 3 years. Morin's probably 5 years out from being an impact player, though. |
