That's the whole point. The Flyers as a team, were inconsistent defensively. But when a team breaks down defensively, just blame the defenseman. Because they're the only player responsible for playing defense. - MJL
exactly. its like when people blame the goalie every time a goal is scored.
yeah no one back checked, our defenders were grotesquely already on the wrong side of their own blueline. but damn it, the goalie was there! |

Streit $5.25
AMac $5
Coburn $4.5
Luke & Grossman $3.5 each
Where do we have 6 guys at $5 mill each?
Edit Please do not count Pronger, he's on LTIR, & Kimmo will not get $6 mill again.
Sorry, I'm in the minority, we need another significant piece on the blue line.
Kimmo is 40 years old, & a top 4 of any combination of the names listed above is not good enough. |

no no. what you said is dead (frank)ing on.
its bullpoop that its acceptable.
i mean i guess part of me actually hates the leagues for letting them do that, because teams just want to win, but christ it pisses me off. |

I'm enjoying both series. But the LA/Chicago series is so much better hockey. And far more exciting to watch.

I really get all that but at some point when a guy picks up the puck at his own blue line and skates from the middle of the ice all the way to the boards and goes wide is it really to much to ask our dman to once in a while be able to skate back, take a good angle, and at least force the puck handler to go around the net or impede him or alter his course in some way rather than watch skate by like the wind. I mean we're not talking about bure out there. For gods sake the mother f ing 4th line was doing it to all our dman. All series long. Sorry if I should expect more from the highest paid d corp in the league. |

i think streit is overpaid. but really, you guys desperately crave what he brings. coburn is underpaid. amac is right around what things cost.
actually, i think luke schenn and grossman may well be the issue. 7 million dollars is way too much to have invested in that element. |

Time will tell on those players. Maybe we should be giving our 1rst pick to det so they will advise us the rest of the draft. - Sms401
i think it has less to do with where you pick than it does w/ scouting, organizational philosophy and awareness. for example, the flyers won their cups because of bernie parent (yes, they had other great players but they don't win w/ out bernie), but for some reason they decided having an elite goalie was not that important for like 15 years. if the lindros era flyers have an elite goalie they likely win in 1995 or 1997. another example would be the 2012 draft....someone should have known how good a guy like maata was and that they needed him way more than scott laughton
edit: i truly hope hextall brings a new philosophy and starts to draft better....that said when elite sniper dave brown is your organization top scout it might be a long time waiting |

I'm right there with ya then. I don't want to see a penalty called every play, but c'mon if you call a few penalties on them then it leaves them 2 options: stop clutching/grabbing or keep taking penalties. Apparently the league loves option 3: clutch and grab with no penalties |

and to me, thats not a coincidence.
i dont have a problem with a team wanting to be defensively oriented. i mean its boring, but thats their prerogative how to construct a roster and how to play.
i have an issue when you go outside the rulebook with your play to dictate the style you want, and it is permitted due to some rudimentary and archaic mentality.
if you want to win games 2 1, trap and jam, and shut down other stars. i feel sorry for your fans to have to watch that, but more power to you. however, interference, holding, and hooking should not be acquiesced by the league as fair tools to do such. |

Each play has to be looked at individually. Does the defenseman have the support and back checking pressure to be able to step up and challenge an opposing player on the rush?
I'm not saying that the Flyers defenseman are never to be blamed, or never make mistakes. or can't do some things better. But it's whole lot easier to play defense when the team around them is playing solid team defense. Defense is a very tough position to play without that support.
See a good scoring chance or a goal given up, and it's automatically blame the defenseman, because he was the last guy in the picture.
It's sometimes like blaming the free safety for not make the TD saving tackle, on a 60 yard TD run, when the opposition RB just ran right through the middle of the entire defense.

I thought Streit played much better in the 2nd half of the season, & playoffs.
Sorry, I know no one wants to do this, but I want Niskanen, he would solidify our top 4, and make us that much better.

im right there. i dont want to see more powerplays. i dont. and i dont want whistles and the flow of the game to stop every single moment. but if that is what it initially takes to get teams to (frank)ing stop, then do it.
theyll stop.
and if they dont, and still believe it to be in their advantage to surrender 7 PPs a game in order to spend the rest of it clutching at grabbing, then oh well. at least its fair.

But you know what, when you don't have a true top pairing that you can ride for 25 minutes or better a night. You have to do things more by committee. And you need that more experienced defenseman depth. And that costs more.

yup. thats how i see it. a roster shouldnt have both of them. certainly not at that price. if you are being paid 3.5 mil for the stay at home defender role with 0 puck skills, you should do it so effectively that they do not need a carbon copy of you.

it does. im not gouging the flyers for the fact that they spend so much on it. more so that they dont necessarily allocate their funds in a good enough balance.
but then again, you can only really pay who is available. |

What role or position a player played in his playing career has zero bearing on how good of a scout he is. And Brown is not the team's top scout. Chris Pryor is.
Flyers draft by BPA philosophy. I don't think that is going to change under Hextall.
