For Thornton, I think as you soon as you remove the expectation of him being "the guy" he will be much better off. He plays great in the regular season and did well in the Olympics. But it seems as soon you look for him to lead the way...poof! He's gone. - glove_was_stuck

I agree. Play that Hossa in CHI or Gaborik in LA type role. He's still a core guy, but it's not considered "the guy" as you say. |

Marleau going to the Lightning wouldn't surprise me. But if they're looking for veteran leadership, he's the wrong guy for that.
Thornton being moved would surprise me quite a bit, and I can't see the Red Wings putting together an appealing enough package unless Tatar is coming back. |

i honestly don't know why any team would want old expensive players like these two when they can score a young vinny on the cheap from philly |

Marleau and Thornton are here to stay.
They JUST signed contracts with the Sharks, with NMC.
The only change we'll see will be Boyle and Havlat gone. - Scabeh
Sincerely doubt that. Just because they have NMC's doesn't mean they can't be moved. |

Well they are old and on the expensive side. But Thornton and Marleau are both still elite players that can contribute as long as they aren't being relied upon to lead a team to the Cup. But as support/role guys who are just counted on to play their game behind a true leader, they could be the missing pieces to a team making a Cup push. |

After seeing the defeat on Joes face in game 6 when they were down by just 1 goal, I know he isn't a winner. A winner will be screaming and watching the game getting amped up. Joe had a depressed stare and was looking directly across the ice not watching play, not saying anything to anyone.
Patty is not the single guy that will take a team over the top but if the right guy was there then Patty follows and does well.
So for me I hope Joe goes and Patty stays. - Ryman
I'm the opposite. I think Patty is more the issue, and I say that based mostly around what JR and Boyle have had to say. I know JR is a kook, but based on Patty's body language, he does seem to lack the passion and fire it takes to win in the playoffs. |

It is. But in San Jose, they are being depended on as the leaders. Depended on as the guys too lead Pavs and Couture and our young players. If they stay, and I think it's a 50/50 they'll both be back next year, I hope they are given reduced roles so that we can give more ice time and leadership roles to younger guys. Take the C and the A from Joe and Patty respectively. |

But just to add to that, based on what Doug Wilson has said, this team is trying to get younger. With that in mind, I think what this team may need is some younger pieces and assets to help bring some energy into the room, and as I stated earlier, give the leadership positions to guys like Pavs, Couture, Vlasic, etc.
As Wilson has said on numerous occasions this offseason, we may need to take 1 step back, to move 2 steps forward. Perhaps I'm looking too far into what he's saying, but to me this may be insinuating a move to trade a veteran player for younger guys/prospects who will need time to grow. |

This team needs Cup experience added to it, players from Cup winning teams who can inject something into the locker room come mid-April and beyond. - thirstyfin
The problem with that is though, we've been saying that for 4 or 5 consecutive years. "All we need to do is add some cup experience to the roster". Jesus, how much longer are we going to say that? Boyle won a cup, and he wasn't able to do that here. Niemi won a cup, and he hasn't been able to do that here. We brought on Claude Lemieux for god sake with the hopes he would add some "cup experience". Rob Blake, Tim Kennedy, Adam Burish, Niclas Wallin, Ben Eager, the list goes on of all the ridiculous names we've brought in to help with our "cup experience". And the results have been embarrassing.
It's time for change. And I don't care if that means our playoff streak comes to an end. |

Well, they're both younger than Iginla was when Pittsburgh traded two prospects and a 1st round pick for him, so I think IF Patty or Joe are to be traded we will get a similar return. |

Or tampa can just sign a ryan Callahan they have the cap space!! And I will remind you 1 more buyout remains! They used one on vinny! The other is going to be used on Purcell or Ryan Malone. |

Malone will be out of the league next year, he is done.
And if anyone is stupid enough to give up young assets for Joe Thornton, then they truly belong in the Mike Milbury school of mis-management.
