I agree with your goalie drafting philosophy. It's good sense. I remember in the mid to late 1990's, the Devils were crawling with good goalie prospects, kind of like the Flyers were in the late 1970's to early 80's.

Also, enjoyed hearing the Hedberg joke.

Ron Hextall was a 6th round pick. Picking goalies is always a crapshoot.

Loving all this draft/prospect talk

Unless there's a guy their scouts are raving about, I'd be fine if they only took their shots in the dark on goalies in the later rounds... on Finnish (and Swedish) kids.

And yeah, hope our current group of d-prospects fares better than our past group of goalie prospects... 10-years from now, it would be sad if they all just became cautionary tales as well.

Or was the joke the entire flyers draft philosophy history? I'm wondering if this year they change their strategy and go after a center?

Outside of a stretch in the mid-late 1980's, the Flyers have generally done a solid job drafting, overall.

Just trade for a young goalie off of another organization and have less risk.

Well that and taking Ryan Sittler 7th overall in 1992!

Sergei Gonchar was taken a few picks later and Martin Straka a few picks after him

sigh

When the best homegrown dman developed over the last 25 years is Chris Therien you got major issues.

Hopefully Lombardi philosophy has rubbed off on Hextall.

Everyones homework assignment tonight is to watch this game 7

Take the orange shades off, dump out the orangeade, etc

Ask yourself how close are we really to competing with these teams?

Hopefully what's realized this team needs to do everything it can to free itself of vinnys contract, and to keep b schenn.

Bc even if b schenn isn't all he's cracked up to be, he's still a young piece to the puzzle. He'll fill some type of role I'm pretty confident in that

This team not need to make more hasty moves, just Bc we are in girouxs prime. It shouldn't work like that

In fairness:

1) Sittler was considered the "safest pick in the draft" (per THN) beforehand, so the Flyers were hardly the only ones that got it wrong.

2) No one could have predicted the series of major injuries - especially an eye injury - that set back his development.

3) The Flyers didn't expect to be making that pick... they had to when the Eric Lindros trade was held up by Quebec also trading Lindros to the Rangers.

Fair points. I just can't stop imagining adding Gonchar to the Lindros era Flyers though!

Don't even need to see tonight's game to tell you that the Flyers, nor the Rangers as well, are anywhere near Chicago or LA. Whomever wins tonight, will take out the Rags in 5

Its nice to talk about drafting goalies without having the underlying urgency that used to accompany such picks.

Having Steve Mason in the fold gives them a chance. I still believe had he been in the first three games and healthy against the Rags, we are the ones playing for the cup.

Sure, grab a goalie if he is good and available in later rounds, but I would prefer they take the best snipers available for at least the first 3 picks.

Wouldn't take a goalie until the 4th or 5th this year. Phantoms need some restocking at the forward positions pretty badly.

This team was not as far off as people were saying. When the team was firing on all cylinders we were capable of beating every team in the league. Unfortunately we struggled with consistency. When the team played into the system and back checked our defense didn't even look that bad...and even for small stretches they looked dominant. Holding teams without shots on goal for 10 min+ a night.

I am against picketing... I just don't know to express it.
