So you talk about how it would be crazy for the Oilers to trade 2 first round picks for 1, but then suggest Florida trades 2 first round picks for a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd???????? - cap1681

That makes more sense. Still think Edm would have to add more. Yakupov and Huberdeau are a wash, so basically your saying that it would be a 2nd round pick to move up 2 spaces. |

I think there will be a disconnect between what teams below feel they should add to move up two spots and what Florida will want to move down.
I don't think there have been cases (correct me if I'm wrong) where a team has moved out of first overall and collected anything more than a mid round pick or the right to swap firsts the next year. That's why I feel that 2nd would be what is required, not necesarily saying the Oilers should do it unless they feel the guy at 1 is hands down the best guy in the class now and in 10 years. |

When you look at it that's not a ton less than what past trade downs have netted |

It was a different time, but in 2003, the Penguins traded the 3rd overall, a 2nd round pick, and Mikael Samuelsson to the Panthers for the 1st overall and a 3rd round pick. |

I would suggest that Philly leads the league in overpaid defenseman. Why not them? |

Fair enough. I just can't see Edmonton giving up serious assets to move up to 1.
To me their list is:
Ekblad
Draisaitl or Bennet (can't figure which they like more)
Reinhart
There is a good chance Ekblad falls to 3 as Buffalo needs a forward and usually defenseman don't go first overall (see Jones, Larsson). |

If Florida keeps the 1st overall, they take Ekblad. They need a top pairing defenseman. I think they will feign interest in Reinhart or Bennett to try and get something out of Buffalo, then draft Ekblad 2nd overall. |

6 mil would be nuts. That would be more than an already over paid Matt Carle who also is best served as a 3-4 guy |

You could be right. I have read though that Reinhart may end up being winger at the NHL level. That's a versatile player. Considering Florida has Barkov and Bjugstad down the middle with Huberdeau on the wing, I wonder if they go with a safe (I feel the safest pick) in Reinhart and convert him to wing. The best natural winger may be Dal Colle but he's a reach unless they trade down.
I could See:
Flor: Reinhart
Buff: Bennet
Edm: Ekblad
Personally I hope it goes:
Flor: Ekblad
buff: Bennet
Edm: Draisaitl
We sorely need size down the middle in the Pacific division. |

The best player will go 1, regardless of team need.
Colorado had no need for a center last year but took the best player and it seems to be the right move |

Don Cherry and Mike Milbury will still be there, so no, not the most annoying person. They will be taking the 3rd most annoying person off of tv.

I'd put Pierre ahead of them, but then I don't watch the intermissions and I don't live in Canada. |

If nisk signs for 5-5.5 mil, I'd say resign him. Martin only has 1 year left, and as much as I like him, he is getting up there in age. With Maatta and Pouliot going through a tough surgery, they have some question marks on defense, especially with the amount of young kids coming up. If scuds is traded, then the 2015-16 season will feature this defense:
Letang-maatta
Pouliot-Harrington
Despres-bortuzzo
Dumoulin
I don't think it's a bad thing, but there's still a chance pouliot, Harrington, dumoulin, and even despres do not develop into consistent Dmen. Sign nisk for a 6 year deal at 5.5/year and keep him as insurance. If the youngsters do develop into top 4 guys, then trade nisk in a few years. Don't forget, the cap is consistently going to rise - drummer829
Do you really plan on competing for a stanley cup with that D core? |

If I'm the Pens I would rather spend 6mil on a winger to play with Crosby/Kunitz than to pay Niskinen.
Pens have some talent coming up through the ranks on D, especially Pulliot.
Just get a good speedy winger and drop Dupuis to 3rd line and your back in business. |

i would rather get guys who can help the pens then just one guy for 6 mil.... edit: just realized your like the flyers... so of course you would overspend on one guy...
you have to realize a new coach might not have kuni with sid.. i want guys who can score and create plays when they are not on the line with sid or geno... i dont want a winger who they get to play with sid and then sid gets hurt... and the guy sucks |

Ok I wasn't that specific maybe not 6 mil on one guy but depending on who that one guy is (whoever you feel like is worth that money) would be more suitable than paying Niskanen.
Bottom line: I know the market is inflated for Dmen, and he will get his money for sure. I just feel that money should go to fixing either your 3rd line wingers and someone with Crosby. Just my 2cents. |
