It was a curious hire. It still makes me wonder if the original candidate they wanted to hire, went to another team. The Rutherford hire reeks of retread back-up plan. - ravishingone
jr himself said the plan is only a temporary one for 2-3 years, while he grooms the younger guys around..most likely botterill. |

Possible. Or if they move Schenn + for a defenseman + and Vinny for a 3rd line winger and it frees up a deal for others on the roster or system. - Jsaquella
They want a young NHL ready center in exchange for Kesler...My take is that B Schenn is that guy...Still doubt Kesler comes here, however I found it interesting that Dreger went out of his way to mention Anahiem and Philly as suitors, like those are the favorites to land him |

Always tough for a team to trade within the division. If Benning is in full blow it up and rebuild mode, then it would be easier to trade with the Ducks. If he thinks they are borderline playoff team (which I believe), then I can't see him trading within the division.
Torts was a dumpster fire last year, I expect them to be better this upcoming season.

Philly almost automatically gets named-dropped any time a top 6 forward is being shopped. I'm sure they'll kick the tires, but I don't see a move happening.
You would have to find a taker for Vinny and Vinny would have to be willing to go there AND you would have to part with a nice piece to get Kesler. If you're going to shop BSchenn or Laughton or a 1st rounder pick there are so many more pressing needs this team has that should be addressed than acquiring a guy like Kesler with what he is going to bring at this stage of his career. |

I think that's why they get named dropped, because they do kick the tires on a lot of available players. And I think some get wind of just basic talk between teams, and then is how rumors start.

I'd be shocked if the flyers actually do anything... They have no cap space left after signing schenn. At least that's what I'm bracing myself for. |

The Flyers have some Cap flexibility. And they can have even more if they make a few moves. I'll be shocked if they don't do anything. |

The only thing I can see is Hexy coming in and acknowledging the fact we have too many centers and making a move there. Something like Laughton and the 1st to move up in the draft or to get a D man or maybe even a LW. Other than that I don't think we are going to see too much. They will likely give Vinny some more time here before selling him off. |

By cap flexiblity you mean very little.... I could see something minimal like dumping Grossmann for cap relief.... I don't think VL or Hartsy go anywhere... And I can't see them giving up on Brayden despite the trade rumors. |

So Lebron now just named himself "the easiest target in sports". I'm sure there are quite a few netminders who've spent some time in our fair city that would like to have a word with him. |

How much depends on how much the Cap goes up. Based on the cap at 71.1M, they have about 6.5M of cap space to work with. That includes Chris Pronger. If they can make a deal and trade Grossmann, that gets them up about 10M in cap space to work with. Any other deal such as trading Lecavalier, gets them more. Those numbers could be a million or two less depending on what the cap goes up to. They would also have the off season exemption to work with come July 1. Then once the season comes, they have Pronger's LTIR cap space to work with. |

I think they'll do something, but it depends on how easily they can move money out to create more space. |

I don't disagree... I could trade the whole team and get $71 million in cap space... But as is sign b schenn and a back up goalie and you spent $4 of the $6.5 mil in available cap space and they still need to sign 1-2 dmen and a couple on the 4th line. Its tight. |

Agreed. Unfortunately the two guys most of us agree on moving (Vinny and Hartnell) are both tied to long term deals with NTCs. I wonder if either of these guys would waive and if so would either have interest in Nashville because they are basically in the most dire need. |

The problem there IMO is they are selling low, basically a salary dump, for what? To overpay again in FA? They might as well keep both and hope Hartsy has a 37 goal season - then trade him. |

It's going to be a fluid situation. It's going to take other teams willing to deal. The cap rising helps, but at the same time there's going to be guys who are available as teams use the last gasp use of compliance buy outs, other players being shopped that might be more attractive and regular course free agents.
I'm also not sure how eager Hextall is to tie up future cap with either big deals or by eating cash.

Yea it is tight, but it's always going to be tight with the Flyers. And always has been. But yet every year they have room to do things. This year will be no different.
