FWIW, and to steer discussion away from the dreaded Corsi conversation, Pierre McGuire talked about the Pens GM job on XM radio:

Basically, it boiled down to the Pens being unwilling to provide Pierre the security he had at NBC. He has a 7 year deal there and wasn't interested in leaving for a 2 or 3 year deal or to serve as a placeholder. He says Lemieux was very involved and that he respects his views, but that he(McGuire) needed more security to walk away from a sure thing at NBC

- Jsaquella

7 more years??

Yup, his trades, FA signings, and the contracts he's done are, for the most part, poor. Time for a new GM
- BiggE

The Pence and Lee deals are the ones that worry me most. He gave up a huge bounty for Pence and traded him a year later for pennies on the dollar. I doubt you could get any of the three main guys he traded to Houston straight up for any single piece he acquired from the Giants

Tough to argue with that, actually.

But Pierre had to know that there was no (frank)ing way he was going to get a 7 year contract to be a front office guy.

Unless, however, they were discussing maybe compensation in the form of a piece of the team or something.

Absolutely. I also wasn't thrilled with Jimmy Rollin's latest contract, and of course, the Howard deal.

He said he would have accepted 5 years. No mention of any ownership stake

I'm not sure they had a better alternative than Rollins. Either in the system or to sign as a FA.

But yeah.....that Howard deal....

How many GMs get 5 year deals though? Honestly asking.....is that common?

I could see a proven guy getting something like that, but a guy like Pierre, who's been out of the mix? I don't know....

I understand the Rollins deal, at least. Not much out there and Rollins is still an effective player. The Howard deal is just terrible. He not only made him untradeable, he jumped the gun. Howard wasn't a FA for two more years when he signed him to the extension.

Yeah, I hear you re Jimmy. However, the Howard deal alone should cost him his job, that deal is just killing us.

That's a fair point. I doubt many do, but most guys going for GM jobs don't have a nice big contract from NBC as a safety net.

I'm not a huge Pierre advocate, but I also don't think he'd be bad as a GM. He was a disaster as a coach, but GM is a different animal

Per Stephen Whyno, the Lightning have re-signed Calder finalist Ondrej Palat to a new 3 year deal

I keep reading the Bruins might want to move Marchand. He has a cap hit of 4.5mil. Anyone think there could be a deal made. i think Marchand would look nice on that third line. can provide some spark and offense. Just not sure what it would take.

Basically the same deal that Johnson got... you have to think Schenn's going to end up around there, too.

Now they need to dump Purcell and Ryan Malone.
I wonder if they resign Ryan Callahan and for how much?

Drouin coming up, that team is going to be scary.

Was actually away "working" for a while to follow up, but I'm not sure I need to really. The Bowman quote is interesting, and I'm guessing that teams do have more concrete numbers on some of these metrics than we have access to. Fans and pundits do the best they can with what's available I guess. (Is zone entry data actually accessible? I've seen some articles written where a writer may follow a game or two in detail, but is any of that logged by a larger source for more games? I'm doubting it just due to the sheer number of games you'd need to keep an eye on. It'd be a full time job.)

If he did a good job, it would have been hard for the team to get rid of him. Even if they did, he would be able to find another job with NBC or another franchise.

Like the Bartolo Colon trade. Montreal traded Grady Sizemore, Cliff Lee and Brandon Phillips for half of a season of Colon.

Zone-entries are currently tracked by fan volunteers for just a handful of teams. Luckily for us, the Flyers are one of them... Eric Tulsky is the guy you're probably talking about.

If the NHL adopts a player/puck tracking system like SportVU in the future, and they make that data available, we could have fun stuff like that for every team.

I figured around $2.5mm, but it could be higher. It will be interesting to see how Hextall handles it.
