But The commish wants them there and will underwrite those teams till the end of time. Only took 20+ years for the TV deal.
Revenue sharing by the NHL if not from the TV and merchandising is pure Robin Hood politics. Except the poor are millionaires/billionaires/conglomerates toys - Steelmanpa
Pretty much... they don't care if the bottom-feeders lose money or not... they're just there to maintain the national footprint. There's a line of rich-guys waiting to buy those franchises if their current owners get tired of absorbing losses. Worse comes to worst, they relocate the franchise to another Gary-approved location.
Meanwhile, they can keep blaming losses on the players. |

Exactly. It's a highly flawed system. - Jsaquella
I have always thought the commissioner was at best ( and ironically best as) a mid level manager type to get the nickels and dimes in order for the bigger picture
A bean counting accountant licensing type, not a grand vision master planner.
This is why I say Snider talks out of both sides of his mouth, not fighting for his teams and corporations rights and voting with commissioners party line on things that hurt the franchise and benefit small market teams, the commish's pets.
The upper level teams are referred to as "good partners" especially when they open the checkbook for the leagues expansion failures. |

Believe it or not, the Flyers are about average in terms of giving out NTC/NMCs - Jsaquella
That is an eye opener in terms of how much Homer was villified for that.
Maybe other GM's are more selective in who gets the NTC/NMC.
That would be a stat I would like to know- how many other teams have had to bail on players with those type of deals |

It feels like it's been years since since the flyers/rags game 7. I really hope LA sweeps them and gets this over with so we can focus solely on ridiculous trade proposals, FA agent signings and pipe dream capgeek rosters. |

Snider is a businessman. He wants to win, but he's only one voice in the room. He's been helped by the NHL deals with NBC, since they are owned by his partners with the Flyers & Comcast Spectacor.
And while he is willing to spend profusely to try and win, at the same time he would love if he didn;t have to . |

I just looked at the Flyers and several other teams on capgeek. IIRC the Flyers had 9 guys with clauses. Boston had 11 or 12. Vancouver had 11 or so. |

That is a fine line of tightrope to be walking- being part of the NHL's partners in both national broadcasting and as an owner.
At what point is this a conflict of interest- whats good for the corporation vs whats best for the team and that is my point. |

I think that Snider's just playing ball. He knows that Bettman will get the needed votes and that if he's seen as a trouble maker some of the league concessions he's gotten could dry up |

Some of those teams have multiple elite core players to whom you can't avoid giving MC's (Toews/Kane/etc). I wonder what the list would look like if we excluded those players and only looked at the discretionary/avoidable ones. |

Show off
Maybe more telling is the latest batch of deals handed out, only Lecavalier got a clause. Mason, Streit, Emery, MacDonald, Read...none of them got any clauses. |

So Ek has a 20% chance that Mez comes back to us. I was like "REALLY?!?"
I don't think so. I missed the whole Mez blog conversation from the other day so forgive me... |

Trade invalidates the clause. |

Well, Boston, for starters gave NTCs or modified NTCs to Marchand, Kelly & Boychuk. Two of Anaheims are held by Cogliano & Souray. Chicago gave clauses to Bickell, Oduya, Rozsival & Crawford. |

Hilarious how Ryan Clowe has a NMC but Weber, Kopitar, Zetterberg and Hossa have zero trade protection. |

The only questionable ones on the Flyers are Vinny and Hartsy (full NMC's)... the rest are modified NTC's and G and Pronger... it's not so bad in that respect. |

Exactly -- modified NTCs are simply the cost of doing business.
Full NMCs...I wouldn't give one of those to anybody. Period. |
