You mean the 9 points he had though?
You can spin it anyway you want Callahan is nothing more than a glorified 3rd liner on a second line. You can get his 44 points per year else where and at much less the cost - Stripes77

People who want Callahan are fans who want to "win" the offseason. They want to be on top the hockey world July 1st because we have no chance of being on top of the hockey world June 13th. "Winning" the offseason just doesn't translate. - Buffalo-Sabres
I would rather win long term and have players want to come here because we have built something special . May take a few years . But it will be worth the wait. I know people are impatient but , patience is a virtue ! |

I wouldn't worry much about Ryan Callahan there Sabres fans...
If the guy has a competitive bone in his body, he won't be signing with Buffalo.
We're just to far away right now. A guy like that probably goes to a place like Boston. |

I'm worried a little bit. Yes, one would think if he wants to win a Cup he wouldn't come here, but if Buffalo's the only one willing to back up the Brinks truck, as Terry Pegula has been known to be, it could change one's outlook. Especially when the Union is whispering in your ear "take it, take it, take it". |

What if he's in the mood to captain a growing team into the next few seasons. We may be poop now but I have a feeling the census about the Sabres is that we're going to be quite formidable in the next few seasons. Some guys might like that. |

It's not just the fact that he didn't have a good series. Not only did he not have a good series, but the team that traded him got much, much better after he left. - buffalofan19
What has StLouis done in the cup?
1goal, -4
Is it his fault they are losing? Or is LA just a better team?
Just like Montreal was a better team than Tampa without their starting goalie. Their backups were a joke. |

We've got more cap space than God Almighty. That's the only actual concern here. |

I suspect by his comments to the Tampa media he has a big money plan that doesn't involve Tampa. |

That fine
But he's not why tampa lost that series like a lot of ppl keep alluding to
I'll be just fine if we don't get Callahan
If we do...
I think he'd make A MUCH MUCH better captain right now than anyone else we have
Our options next year appear to be Ehrhoff, Stafford, or a young kid who prob isn't even close to ready for that kind of responsibility

They do now, but what about 4 or 5 years from now, when the guys they draft are up for big pay days (hopefully, because it means Murray did his job well), and Callahan's salary is still on the books and nobody wants to pay another $6 million for a broken down 35 year-old that's down to 25 points a season if he stays healthy? It's the term that scares me, not the money. If Callahan is willing to sign a 2 or 3 year deal, then knock yourself out. Any new contract longer than 3 years should be looked at like cancer by the Sabres. |

Agree. That would be Darcy's way of doing it, which is why they got so bad they couldn't even make the playoffs, now last place.

I hear ya! Some people just like ganging up (bully factor). Give me Ryan Callahan - buy out Leino, pay Callahan 2 mill more than Leino contract.

Who cares who captain is though? Having to be a captain of a lottery team isn't something that is a big deal. In fact it could be a curse, ask Ott. Leadership on a team with no talent isn't going to be fun. In fact I would rather them not name a captain and one of the younger guys take a leadership role and make it his team, set the right example to the new kids that are coming in and grow together as a team. |

I disagree with none of that
However...
We do need to find SOMEONE that can lead all these kids and show them how to be professionals & not punks like Seguin and E.Kane
I don't think MFE is gonna cut it!

Well that's certainly a possibility, and if it does go down that way Buffalo will have themselves a very Drury-esque captain.
In fact, Callahan was even groomed under Drury (who also received a $7 mill contract).

Who were the veterans that "led" the 2006 and 2007 teams? Drury? He played a much more integral role both offensively and defensively than Callahan ever would. For the most part, that team grew up with each other...then they got big pay raises and became either content or mentally fragile. I'm still not sure which. |

Not if they aren't ready for it
Can't we make a good case that that contract was what stunted the development of Myers?
Giving someone the "C" before they're ready can do the same

Other than the rotating captaincy (which fed into Pominville being captain), this team has been bringing in captains for a long time now. Personally I'm sick of signing someone in free agency and slapping a C on their chest. Doesn't show much faith in the roster being built by the team.
If there are no leaders worthy, don't name a captain, just stop bringing in people and doing it.

I did say not name someone captain let someone earn it or prove it before putting a letter on his chest. In the mean time that's where Nolan has to do the most work changing the attitude in the locker room |
