I watched the first 2 periods but fell sleep before the third was over. My capacity to care is not very high for these two teams.

My capacity to see the Kings zamboni the ice with the Rangers' faces is consuming me

I can't believe that happened twice. It wasn't even like someones stick stopped the puck's momentum. The puck just died right on the goal line as everyone stood and watched.

How desperate are we that Niskanen @$7M and Stralman @$5M both sound in the ballpark, lol?

I know. All goalies do maintenance in the crease, but that puck looked like it was sliding over sandpaper.

Nothing to do with being desperate. It's the salary climate of the NHL. You have to overpay for good players. I have no problem with anyone who says that's too much to pay for those players. That's a reasonable argument. But there is also a problem that some fans idea of what is expensive, hasn't evolved equally with the growth of player salaries. 4.5M is what 3M was a few years ago. And a 5M cap hit isn't really a big deal.

What player can the expect to reasonably acquire, is more of a guarantee. They always have the option to trade Grossmann or Schenn if necessary.
- MJL

I'm probably one of the few who's fine with Luke Schenn and Nick Grossmann. Yes, in a perfect world every defensemen would be great with the puck but neither player is. However, when paired with the right defense partner, both are very solid. At the same time, I think we jumped the gun on signing MacDonald to as much as we did. This isn't the knock on the player but more a knock on the needs of the team already.

I stated in my posts that if the bidding war drives the price too high, you walk away.

I am not, have never been, and will never be that desperate.

I'd absolutely roll with something like Coburn-Alt, Grossmann-Streit and MacDonald-Schenn next season and take my chances.

I'm dead serious. If they can somehow manage to escape Lecavalier's contract only to strangle themselves with another long-term deal with a higher cap hit...it'd be different if they didn't have the young defensemen developing that they do.

But they do have them. And sometimes you just have to push yourself away from the table and think about two years down the line.

There's enough risk on the defense, with Streit and MacDonald's deals. There's no need to add another when you have four kids in Alt, Ghost, Hagg and Morin who are developing.

I'm fine with both players also. But I also feel that the Flyers are one player too heavy on the stay at home defenseman type of player. Adding a more mobile, albeit less physical defenseman, helps with that. If the price is too high, then explore other options.

I think 4.5M would be a good solid deal for both sides. But that may not get it done if a bunch of teams get involved in a bidding war.

Alt is going to play with Coburn and be matched against top lines? Those young defenseman are years away from play top roles on the Flyers defense.

Yes, he could, much the same as every other team who makes the choices to develop from within does.

Ryan McDonagh, Marc Staal and Dan Girardi all got inserted into the lineup and the Rangers took their lumps. They buried Wade Redden in the minors to do it.

At some point, you have to take the bandaid off and put one kid in the lineup and run with it for an entire season.

No rookie defenseman is ever entirely ready. But the Flyers have to stop thinking that they're so different than every other successful team in the league and yes, insert a rookie defenseman and let them play through the ups and downs that come with being one.
