Clark Bishop - Center - Breton Screaming Eagles - 2014 NHL Draft
"Bishop is all heart and work ethic. Not blessed with the natural talents of others in his draft class, Bishop uses his physicality, grit, work rate, smarts and tremendous skating ability to make things happen on both sides of the puck.."

I believe Honka will fall to the 2nd round, but I would be extremely happy with a Robby Fabbri or Jarred McCann....super happy if Jake Virtanen drops or Flyers trade up for him. |

2 questions.
Why are we going after Myers? Dumb, in my opinion. He's vastly underachieved, is expensive, and is on the rung above bust status.
Secondly, why would Timonen be getting top pair minutes? - Giroux_Is_God
I don't think he's anywhere close to a bust. He's had 2 bad seasons on one of the worst teams in the NHL. And similar things were probably said about Chara when he went from the Islanders to the Senators and then the Bruins. But Myers could be expensive, I agree with that. Still, if the price is right, I take him on the Flyers in a heartbeat. And Buffalo might do it with their strong D prospects ready to go in a season or two.
Interesting little tidbit: Buffalo played 39 different players this past season to the Flyers' 27, and 4 of them were zero or better +/-, with the best being +1, and he played 12 games.

So more than likely we just resigned Kimmo for 3.5 mil.

Agreed, I would not call our D strong or dominating, but there really isn't anyone I'd call weak in terms of NHL starters. There are no glaring issues. We just wish they were a bit more mobile and maybe a little more steady with the puck. Any serious upgrade is too expensive and any minor upgrade isn't really worth it and might turn out to be worse. - flyler
I had to respond to this again.
This is really the most accurate grasp of our D that I've read in a very long time. The grass is always greener on the other side if you simply give away players and replace that player with a more handsome face. It's just a silly reason to do so. Our defense is what it is. Far from perfect but it's not gonna be a quick fix either. |

Yep. It also gives them flexibility-$2mm cap hit, and bonuses that can be deferred.
So far, Hextall has been doing a good job. |

I say upgrade the forwards because we have space and there are solid upgrades to the Left wing spot to be had. Resign Schenn, move Vinnie and take a chance on a Veteran Left Wing scorer for the first or second line. Give Manning or Lauridson the option to play the 7th spot and let the Other players mature on the Phantoms. Turn the Phantoms into a championship team and you get these kids used to playing in a AHL winning culture. And then like Carter & Richards, they'll take that with them into the NHL. - flyler
The lack of speed is a glaring issue. The lack of any solid ability in playing the puck for several members of the proposed top six is a glaring issue. I'm not saying rush out and add somebody because he has a name, but there are options out there that are better than what they have...and honestly, if it means getting a legit first pair guy that can do a lot and play in all situations, do it, even if it is expensive.
Even if it's only a minor upgrade, it has to be considered. They need to improve the back end. It can be done and done intelligently in short term or even stop gaps that make the mix better than it currently is now.
As far as left wing, why trade for a veteran scorer? I submit Matt Read. Guy scores 20+ goals, playing against top competition, in a shut down role. There's no need to use assets to fill a position that can likely be filled from within.
With the addition of Pierre Bellemare, they might already have a capable third line replacement for Read, and I think a third line of Bellemare, Couturier & Raffl could be pretty solid, if Bellemare can adapt to the NHL. They also have Scott Laughton in the mix.
If none of those float your boat, it's generally easier and cheaper to add a good 3rd liner than a 1st or 2nd line scoring winger. If you're going to make a move address areas of real need. LW is a need, but it should be able to be handled as a secondary need. Defense is a real and major need. |

If Brad Richards gets bought out, sign him and make him and Vinny play wing. It'll be anarchy

Akeson/Schenn/Read needs to be a thing... shades of Calvert/Schenn/Glennie from Brandon.
Waffl could have another 5-10 goals in his stick, too.
Under the circumstances, better to promote the kids up the lineup than pay UFA prices for middling talent (Raymond, Pouliot). If some serviceable winger is available in September for a bargain, than sure. |
