[quote=PhillaBully]yeah you have to change your name to superphaneufbro . i agree dont want any part of phaneuf. im ok with taking a step back this year.
I want nothing to with Dion. The Maplel Leaf fan base is praying they can dump him and his 7 yr, 7 million dollar contract. He is not a number 1 and he is just simply overrated - 3flyerkids
I also have no illusions about Cup contender glory this upcoming season. I want no part of Phanuef. He can suck it.
If Hexy can improve the team and make them in to a cup contender quickly, he should do it. but adding a long term contract at 7 million per is not the way to do it, especially if it means getting rid of good prospects. |

I agree. I think Schenn and Coburn together could be a good starting point to get the Flyers the first overall and Quinton Howden.
Florida gets a top six centerman with potential and a top four d-man both young enough to stay with their core and the Flyers get a top nine forward with potential and probably a future top four d-man in Ekblad with the chance of being a top 2. Florida would also signal to all the free agents that they are ready to compete next year.
Yes, our defense would be worse next year (since I would send Ekblad back to juniors), but long term I think it would be a good move. There is no better year to risk our team handling losing significant pieces with such a good draft and some potential assets (i.e. Timonen) to trade at the deadline.
Then again, armchair GMing is very easy. - aflyerpower8
And if Ekblad turns out to be much less than expected (EJ, JJ, Gudbranson, Behn Wilson), what then? You're left with Quinton Howden, who is barely NHL-viable.

Agree. I would be worried if Homer was still the GM. Because I could see him going for Phaneuf. Trust me, the Toronto fan base wants nothing to do with him. I definitely do want that contract and player on this team.
B Schenn would have to be in a package for a younger Dman in order for us to get any value. |

This. No interest in Phaneuf. Age, contract, and what he would cost in a trade all make it an easy no for me. If he was a FA? Maybe. |

I really don't think what the Toronto fanbase thinks is relevant. When a team was a mess the way that Toronto was, the defenseman tens to be the scapegoats. Especially the higher minute defenseman. |

The fan base sees 49 million locked into an over rated player who lacks leadership and often folds under pressure in late minutes of game. The Flyers could get something elsewhere that is better and a lot cheaper

Phaneuf routinely plays the toughest minutes, in the most over scrutinized market, on a poorly run team.
Sorry, he IS a legitimate number one defenseman in the NHL. People may not like him, but he is a very good player. Note I didn't say elite. He's not Chara. Nor is he Doughty.
But he would be the best defenseman in Philly by a good bit.
Avoiding Phaneuf because Timonen is signed may just be the least logical statement I've heard. A 40 year old guy taking one kick at the Cup vs a 29 year old, first pair defenseman?
All that said, Phaneuf wouldn't be my first option. I don't like his contract, but it's also not a horrible deal. My concerns are tied more to age and the length of the deal. Some defensemen aged great and were still very good at age 37 (Phaneuf's age at end of deal). Others were not.
There's other options out there, but I'd be open to Dion. |

I haven't thrown my hat into the Phaneuf ring, but this post pretty much sums up my position about Phaneuf the player and how I'd feel about a potential deal.

I'm not advocating acquiring Phaneuf. It would really depend on the cost. But really 7M for a top defenseman isn't outlandish. |

considering for a 35 year old...
Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie 23m
Last I heard, and it is a fluid situation subject to change, Andrei Markov was asking MTL for a 3-year deal worth $6M per year. |

Even with the cap (hopefully) going up every year, I don't like his contract, both cap hit and length. Going after him seems like the same reaching we've seen the last 4-5 years. They finally have some viable prospects in Hagg, Morin, Ghost that could turn into top-pair players, and they're on ELC's right now. I'd rather stick with what they have and bring those guys along than tie up big money into a player long-term. |

He would not have got that kind of contract if Nonis waited a " little longer" instead of announcing it on New Years Day. His play is inconsistent...as we saw during last half of season. Most of all I think he is NOT Captain material. What do they do? Take it off him and sit in controversy for 7 years? They can't do that. They will have to deal him and hope it is not to Philly.
I can't tell you what " something elsewheres's" are because I don't know what kind of package Hexy could offer to another GM. I just think if B Schenn is traded it should be for a Dman that is a little younger and doesn't have a 49 M price tag attached.

The conversation of sending B Schenn to Toronto for Phaneuf concerns me. Yes we need an upgrade on D and even with his issues I think Phaneuf could do that. But I am having this deja vu moment where we traded a forward to Toronto where he blossomed and the D-man we got back continues to struggle. I do have hope that by the end of their careers that trade will pan out pretty even but I can't gaurantee it and it makes me leery of this trade. We all know that the Leafs are desperate for centers so asking for Schenn makes sense. I guess I'm just gun shy. |

Problem is he is not a top Dman. Maybe a second.
Keith, Suter, Weber, Doughty, Subban, are worth that money and term. Not Dion. |

Ihave mixed feelings on this Phanuef rumor. For one the money seems like a lot. BUt on the other hand he playes hard, quality minutes and every situation. I just don't see what the pieces would be in the trade. |

Cheaper and better? That's a loaded question, if we assume that Phaneuf is paid market value (which he probably is, maybe a bit overpaid). But things I would consider before Phaneuf:
- Trying to pry Alzner or Calrson out of Washington. With the management turnover and true showing by the Caps, they may be open to moving one of them out for more depth up front.
- Going after Josi in Nashville
- Niskanen as a UFA (costs no assets, just cap space)
- trying for Giordano from Calgary, as they need scoring help.
Off the top of my head. |
