Yes he did. Like I said, if you assume they wanted Schenn at center (which they tried to do even after Vinny came back), then he has no spot. - jmatchett383
I think Berube definitely wants Schenn at center. I don't think that was the case under Laviolette. That has to be considered when looking at the signing. |

Fair enough. So yes, at the time, he had a role. Under the new regime, that does not seem to be the case. |

Yes, they certainly can be called assumptions. Because I've read time and again, what Hextall said in interviews taken out of context. |

Well that's a big issue, and why it might not be a bad idea to try and trade him. He is a veteran player that at this point, doesn't have a clear role in the lineup. |

He's not a real #1. He's a slower Coburn with more offense and a massive contract. - Feanor
I disagree. Yes he is slower, so was Pronger but he was still very effective. He has more offensive and defensive ability and he makes less crucial mistakes than Coburn while maintaining a plus player rating before the Leafs went in full collapse mode which happens every year back before Phaneuf even was a leaf. If we were to grab him I would expect the Leafs to keep some of the cap hit anyways unless they took Vinny off our hands |

As much as I would be curious to see Read in a scoring role, his chemistry with Couturier is amazing, and I'd be hesitant to break them up. |

Phaneuf routinely plays the toughest minutes, in the most over scrutinized market, on a poorly run team.
Sorry, he IS a legitimate number one defenseman in the NHL. People may not like him, but he is a very good player. Note I didn't say elite. He's not Chara. Nor is he Doughty.
But he would be the best defenseman in Philly by a good bit.
Avoiding Phaneuf because Timonen is signed may just be the least logical statement I've heard. A 40 year old guy taking one kick at the Cup vs a 29 year old, first pair defenseman?
All that said, Phaneuf wouldn't be my first option. I don't like his contract, but it's also not a horrible deal. My concerns are tied more to age and the length of the deal. Some defensemen aged great and were still very good at age 37 (Phaneuf's age at end of deal). Others were not.
There's other options out there, but I'd be open to Dion. - Jsaquella
I agree. I in no way would give up Schenn or Couturier. Laughton however is a young Center that probably will never play for the Flyers unless he pushes Couturier out of the picture which doesn't seem likely. To me it looks as if Laughton could become equal to Coots at best. Add him in a package with a bad contract to negate Dions and maybe throw in Grossman.

U wouldnt give up your third line center for a #1defenseman? |
|
|
|
Actually that would do it for me as well. - MBFlyerfan
I would go with that as well. Swapping salary for a few years and the cap in a few years goes up and up. The 7 mill would be more like 5 within a few years
Plus its an under 35 contract, if Phaneuf suffers a career ending injury he can retire cleanly, as could VL
Shame the Leafs already used their compliance buyouts....

Laughton, the guy who was chosen as captain of Canada's WJC team and was one of the leading scorers in the OHL despite missing a ton of games, will never play for the Flyers? I think most people are slotting him in to anchor the 4th line this year. |

I don't think they'd CBO him. They'd be able to get some minimal return for him if it came to that and they really wanted him gone. |

Nope - if you are counting Couts as that third line center. For a true #1 defender I'd waive goodbye to B Schenn though. |

Would you be willing to move #17 + #48 to BUF for #31 + #49 in the upcoming draft to have them CBO Vinny for us? |
