You can think whatever you want but how much possession he had doesn't tell the whole story. An example of how St Louis being able to simply push him down, while St Louis was able to get into an easy scoring position only tells one of a few stories. Which led to a goal against.
- SuperSchennBros

Possession might not tell the whole story, but neither does bringing up one instance of Timonen getting beat for a goal.

The Flyers gave up 9 goals while MacDonald was on ice, they gave up 6 when Timonen was. Nobody is saying Kimmo is great, but he was Flyers best Dman last season

Now, keep in mind the relationship between climate and weather.

Weather is what the atmosphere is doing and how it is acting on a daily basis. It differs from day to day.

Climate, however, is the average weather over a period time. It has a broader scope.

Weather does not tell the whole story. Climate does.

Similarly, I don't believe Kimmo was as terrible as you're making him out to be. Like SportsFella said, he was put up against some of the toughest minutes on the team, and still came away with better possession numbers than other defensemen.

This is the perfect example of how advanced stats are a great supplement. You see a player as "the worst on the team" and site one example of weather you saw on one shift. I see otherwise- looking at the climate of Kimmo, I saw a player who played, for the most part, well against the other team's top units, even as a 40 year old. Analytics back that up as well.

I'm not saying Kimmo was a Norris winner in the playoffs, but I think it's pretty tough to say he was the worst player on the team.

Keep in mind the Olympics too. He was gassed, on top of all of his assignment matchups and heavy minutes.

I guess one great play by a HOFer defines how he and the rest of the team performed through the entire round.

You do realize the Flyers weren't very good at even strength as a whole.

yes, it would be unfair for me to ignore the Olympics. At the same time, puck possession is brought up. As a defense, isn't a defenseman playing more without the puck then with it? I kind of feel like that's a pretty odd stat to bring up in his defense.

Please take the time to read and understand advanced stats before ignoring them.

I used to think advanced stats were useless in team sports, but they do serve a purpose and explain a lot.

I kind of agree with SSB that Kimmo (and Amac and a lot of them) did not look great in the playoff series.

I don't think he was the worst player but he can't be relied on to face top competition for 25 minutes either.

I am completely psyched he is back, as he still has the ability to make the other D guy he is paired with play better. We saw it with Coburn, and with LSchenn as well.

I would like to see him used in spots with both those guys, and hope they switch him and Streit on the 1st and 2nd PP units. He can also show any of the prospects that get called up how to play and prepare for the game the right way.

I think this was our point. He may have struggled, but he wasn't the worst player and he wasn't the only one who struggled.

The Flyers defense is like a house of cards right now. Kimmo and Coburn have kept this thing from completely collapsing. Without either of them, this team would be significantly worse.

Hainsey, Gilbert, Nikitin, Fayne or even a vet like Derek Morris might be good contributors. I mean we're looking at stopgaps for a year or two until they have a better feel for the kids, why pay a premium? Get guys who will keep you competitive if you are unable or unwilling to swing a trade to get a top pair guy.

I remember the good ol days back in October when people said this team wouldn't make the playoffs because their defense is blah blah blah

I also remember when they went out to California, among other places, for a gauntlet of games and came out with every possible point except like 3

I also remember them playing the Hawks, Kings, and Ducks and beating them all in 3 games in 4 nights (I think)

The defense is not as bad as everyone thinks. Just simply not as bad. It's not the Kings or the Hawks out there, but this d corps can get the job done.

- Giroux_Is_God

i agree.

of course dramaccio believes the'yre in "dire straits" if they don't get another puck mover.

No strippers. We all hate strip clubs. That's pretty much the last place I'd want to spend my time.

I havent drank and smoked that much in a long time. Not since college.

9 Of us finished 4 cases in 6 hours.

You were talking about who should win the Conn Smythe just as I was reading the article. Thought I'd share. It wasn't meant to prove anything. I thought it was an interesting article.

At least you don't have to pay extra for the hockey team to finish the job
