Josi, Byfuglien, Erhoff & Yandle would all be more attractive to me, not sure how realistic they are. Id kick tires on TJ Brodie, Shattenkirk, Leddy, Jason Demers & Tyler Myers - Jsaquella
A very interesting list. I'm with you on Byuf especially with the length of his contract and probable assets to acquire him. Yandle will cost more, but I like him also.
Leddy, I need help with because I can't decide if he is anything more then a #5 d-man. I know he is buried behind some really great d-men, but his size concerns me to play top 4 minutes. I'm just not sure. |

Agreed.
Theres also a rumor from Edmonton that has B.Schenn & Coburn headed there for David Perron & either Oscar Klefbom or Mark Maracin.
Id be ok with that, so long as its a first move with a forward traded to add a defenseman - Jsaquella
I don't know much about them. It would leave our defenseman really weak though. |

Both good prospects, scouting reports says very good skaters. Havent seen a ton of Klefbom, but Oilers like him a ton. Marincin is a big, thin kid (6'4" 190) who played well over 44 games in EDM last year |

Leddy is biggest unknown on list. Added him because hes young & has a load of PO experience |

They would need to go after a more established dman in free agency to offset the loss of Coburn. Otherwise, next season would be a lost season. |

Without factoring, the holes it would create on the roster. Perron for Coburn would be a pretty fair hockey trade, IMO. Both have been inconsistent in their careers with glimpses of dominance. Age and cap hits are pretty similar.

honestly...
It would be nice to see both trades go thorugh...
B Schenn, Grossmann, and a 1st for Phaneuf
Coburn for Perron (or something close)
Vinny is a goner imo.
Perron-Giroux-Jake
Hartsy-Couts-Read
Raffl-Laughts-Simmer
??? - Hall - Rinaldo
Kimmo-Phaneuf
MacDonald-Schenn
Streit-??? (Lauridsen, Alt)
I think that would be a balanced approach to mixing up the team a little w/o sacrificing too much youth. |

I think your forgetting about the French forward they just signed. I think they move on from Hall especially if they trade B. Schenn. They're going to need a better defensive forward who can play over ten minutes a night to limit the burden on Laughton his rookie year (B Boyle?). The tinkering to the blueline isn't finished after the Kimmo resigning, it will be interesting to see where Hexy goes.

I think we've gotten into a situation where people feel the Flyers need to do SOMETHING. There is no reason we need to make a play for a #1 defenseman this offseason. Flyers just look under every rock, but they shouldn't feel they need to make a deal just to make a deal. Thats how you end up with JVR for L Schenn.
I don't like Phaneuf's ability to age. Defenseman who age well are generally the smart ones with strong puck skills or strong skating. Phaneuf lacks elite puck skills and isn't a very good skater. He's not the most positionally sound player as well.
He's defintiely a top pairing guy now, but I don't think he will maintain that level of play for 7 more years or even close to that. - PhillySportsGuy
Well said. I don't want Schenn in this deal at all. The Flyers are up against the cap right now, I don't want Phaneuf and his contract. Just be patient and let the young guys mature, in the mean time look for someone who won't cost them young prospects.

I have no problem with them trying to improve the roster right now. As much as I hope the young prospects will work out, there is no guarantee any of them will be difference makers. I'm not suggesting gut what little prospects are available in the system currently, but I certainly want to see them retool and take a run for the Eastern Conference this year.
The team already has some of the hardest pieces in place to make a run right now. Hart Trophy candidate, Selke type center, upper echelon goalie, and two really good young wingers (Voracek/Simmonds). I expect more then wait and see. There can be a balance of playing to win now and not blowing up the future.

Yes, true -- but again, there are limits to player movement, especially when you are capped out or when you are trying to move older, high-salaried players.
Yes, in theory, you can say, "Hey, 33-year-old Dion Phaneuf's been surpassed by Young Player X, and we'd like to move him along. Anybody wanting the last three years of Phaneuf at $7 per? Anybody? Bueller?"
Rosters do evolve. But they evolve far more slowly than they should when you weigh it down with flawed players on very expensive, long-term deals.
Vincent Lecavalier is an example of this. - AllInForFlyers
A roster is 23 players. If they were to acquire a defenseman such as Phaneuf. And a year or two down the line, and young player such as Morin was ready. You can always trade a veteran to make room. Such as a Grossmann, or even Luke Schenn. You can always make room for young players. And you also certainly don't avoid making a move to make the team better, because a young player may or may not come along in the future. |

I'm not against them improving the roster, but I want them to do it in a way that gives them flexibility for the future.
