I know he has maturity issues, but I think a change of scenery could really do wonders for him. I can see him being a 40 goal scorer with G as his center. Ideally, I would only like to see B. Schenn moved for blueline help, but if they can get Kane with trading B. Schenn, I would do it. - ravishingone
Agreed. Adding Kane would be an improvement over what Read would likely bring in terms of production, in which case, Read can remain as an uber third liner. |

Older article, but it deserves a bump, since the Kings just won the Cup again as the NHL's best possession team, making it 4 out of the last 7-seasons that has happened:
http://www.sportingnews.c...-definition-sidney-crosby
- Tomahawk
The Kings weren't the NHL's best possession team in the playoffs. They were the 5th best. And 7 out of the top 10 possession teams in the playoffs got knocked out early, including the top 4.
If we look at the Finals, games 1-3 were pretty much identical is shot differential. Gam3 which the Kings won 3-0, the Kings actually lost the Possession battle by a shot. Game 4, the Rangers won the game 2-1, but crushed in the possession battle, but yet the still won the game. Game 5, the Rangers got crushed in possession, but it still took 2OT's to beat them. You can look all through the playoffs and see how little possession actually mattered.
What mattered is what always matters, putting the puck in the net, and keeping it out of the net. |

Interesting the way Kane's contract is structured. His first two years, his pay out was a total of $7.5 million. Starting this year, $24 million over the next four years. If he is going to be moved, it sure looks like it will be this summer.

That's part of it, sure. The other part of it is to avoid doing things to give possession away. When a guy like Grossmann can't do anything with the puck except dump it in or chip it out, you lose possession of it. Stressing possession and puck support goes a long way to winning the possession battle.
Obviously, there will be times where a dump in or chip out will be necessary, but target guys who have the skill and ability to keep that to a minimum and it goes a long way to helping, as does being smarter when you do dump and chase.
For instance, how often do we see the Flyers dump the puck in when everyone is stationary on the blueline? Not going to win many puck races that way, even if you have a team of Hagelins. - Jsaquella
Grossmann can certainly do more then just dump it out or chip it out. When he has support and an option, he's more then capable of making a simple outlet pass to an open forward. Players like Matt Greene, who is certainly not a wizard with the puck, are fine in the lineup, when they have constant support and they play as a 5 man unit up and down the ice. It would be the same with Grossmann if the Flyers as a team played the same way as a team with puck support all over the ice at 5 on 5.

Yeah, it's a bit unorthodox, but hey, salary has rarely been an issue for the Flyers. |

It's based on the regular season, where the sample size isn't tiny and numbers aren't skewed by matchups and from teams playing the same opponent over and over. |

The structure gave the Jets an out without eating a lot of salary in the first two years. If anything, with his perceived risk of potentially imploding with the salary pay out the next 4 four years, it actually limits the Jets trading partners, IMO. I would be surprised if he was dealt to a mid or small market team.

I'm just jumping into this and didn't read earlier posts but I read that Edmonton article about their interest in Coburn. What about Perron for Coburn? Or did someone say that already? |

Kane is the flat out star of that team, even if he isnt really thought of as one throughout the league. I don't think the Jets will let go of him unless it's a really nice offer. |

I'm aware of the article being based on the regular season. The most important games happen in the playoffs. And the numbers aren't skewed. What the playoffs clearly show, is that when good teams are playing each other. Possession, instead of using the dreaded Corsi word, isn't close to being the factor that some think it is. In fact it's way down the list. Game after game, of playoff Hockey showed that making key plays at key moments. Big saves, key defensive plays. Winning key faceoffs. And clutch scoring and clutch goaltending is what really matters. Just as it always has, and always will. |

Ask yourself what every team the past few years wanted from us in return for a top four D man and then ask yourself if Perron is a good enough return.
Coburn probably isnt getting moved, period. But if he is getting moved to the Oilers its for nothing less than Eberle. |

Have to put that kind of value on a player, when he is that important to your team. Has to be a hell of a return to trade the player.

Yup. I just don't see where guys are seeing swapping Coburn for Perron as a move that helps the Flyers at all. |

Yup. I mentioned stressing possession & puck support, using Grossmann as an example and the point gets missed like Ryan Howard swinging at a slider from a good left handed pitcher. |

I was never a stats guy myself. Find it boring as (frank).
Thankfully teams have other people who pay attention to that stuff. |

i dont think it is a good move for the flyers. they have good wing depth, relatively speaking. and simmer brings that power element.
that being said, some of the early posts really seemed to devalue perron, which surprised me. |

The point didn't get missed. And this response shows that my point in rebuttal was obviously missed. And it's not a coincidence that Grossmann was used as the example. My reply to your post using Grossmann as an example, hit the nail on the head, with how a team can support a player like Grossmann, to the point where they can become better as a team at ES.

yeah. attitude concerns or whatever. i think the guy would be a 35 goal guy consistently with either giroux or crosby.
i think b schenn will be a pretty good player. but i dont think he will be that. |

Is that Fenwick close? Because you told me that you only use Corsi or Fenwick close, numerous times. The top possession team in the playoffs this year was the Pens. They got knocked out early.
