They still need to add at least one defenseman the way I look at it. They could go with Timonen, Coburn, MacDonald, Streit, Grossmann & Schenn again as the top six, but that's really not appealing to me.
IMO, you have 1 legitimate top pair guy (Coburn) and he's more a 2/3 than a 1/2 guy. Timonen is arguably still a 2/3 and Streit is a 3/4 with right partner. To me Grossmann, MacDonald & Schenn are all 4/5 guys.
It's not a completely horrid defense, but it's definitely not a strong defense. Ideally, I'd like to move one of Schenn or Grossmann (preferably Grossmann due to age and injury issues) and bring in a more well wounded guy, like Mark Fayne, who can do more and might cost less money. Still leaves them with out a true number one guy, though.
But moving Coburn out, without another deal in hand, means a top six of Timonen, Streit, MacDonald, Grossmann, Schenn and a rookie(Klefbom, Marincin, Gostisbehere, Alt, Morin or Hagg)...That's not good. - Jsaquella
The deal in hand could be problematic. However, with 6 Mil plus in extra cap space and a stronger front 9 there is much more ability to get a phanuef or ? The dominoes could be in place before the deal actually goes public.

Oh, sure, they could swing another deal after the fact but what if nothing materializes? They'd be (frank)ed. |

Could be a tough year, but you've got an extra top 100 pick and $4 million in cap space to do something. |

Yeah, but I'm not wasting another year of Giroux's prime to Richard around, unless there's no other option. Get a good defenseman first, then consider a Coburn trade
EDIT: They have some good kids in the pipeline, but there's not another Giroux waiting in the wings. |

I wouldn't have an issue with him if he was gay. Knock boots with whomever you want. Just stay away from my daughters, because I have access to firearms. - Jsaquella
Agreed. You do what you do, as far as I'm concerned. |

I would be curious what the price tag for Del Zotto could be? He could be able to be bought low at this point. Not for a bucket of pucks, but the freight charges not astronomical. |

Team went for a youth movement when they traded Carter and Richards. The team keeps trading from a position of weakness. I have been female doging for years, assets, assets, get assets. Nope, fools gold time and time again. It's still fools gold. I stand by the VL/Coburn trade. |

G is under contract for 7/8 years so it's overly dramatic to insinuate the franchise would be Richarding around to upgrade the top 6, add pick(s) and add a top prospect to shed salary while giving up a 1/2 inconsistant Dman. |

Nicolas Grossmann will be 30 on the 22nd of this month. If I really wanted to get picky, I could say he's 29 years of age. |

Giroux's 26. Generally players start to decline in production totals by age 29 or 30. That's 4 years away. |

Does Lecavalier agree to waive his NMC to go to Edmonton? If you want assets, trade Vinny for picks. Trade Grossmann for picks. Stop trading picks for depth guys like Grossmann, Kubina and MacDonald. |

At least we have Domonic Brown, 5 tool player. Not one of them applies to baseball, but he's got 5 tools |

I think we're on the same page. Stop trading picks to attempt to stay relevant. Trade aging assets for picks to stay relevant in the future. |

Sort of. If I can get a 26 year old guy who is a top pair defenseman for the 17th pick, I might be willing to pull the trigger and do it.
I prefer a bilateral approach. Keep an eye on the future, but also don't forget the present. |

Interesting thought raised on twitter. Josh Rimer said that Vinny might waive to go to the Panthers. Does anyone agree to a Lecavalier for Upshall swap?
Pros are losing Vinny's contract not just now, but for the future. Upshall is a capable 3rd liner, with one year left on his deal at $3.5mm.
Cons, first Upshall is still injury prone and isn't a perfect fit. It's also only a gain of $1mm, if Florida is willing to eat the whole Lecavalier contract.
EDIT: Florida may also have no desire to trade for Vinny and might not want to give up a fairly cheap, serviceable guy in Upshall because of the cap floor |

Pimpin' ain't easy. Neither is winning a Stanley Cup. They have some solid kids in the system and need more. They don't have anything approaching a Giroux |
