One of JVR's biggest warts was staying healthy. He's seemed to put that behind him now.
Amazing making that trade leads to a promotion. - PLindbergh31
Actually, I thought it was really funny when Brian Burke criticized Bobby Ryan during the Olympic selections for not being intense enough.
IMO, you can say the same thing about JvR and Burke had no problem trading for him.

Over 30? Check.
Expensive? Check.
Signs of decline? Check.

If this is in reference to me, please show me where i said to trade all that for phaneuf. I also told you last offseason the flyers made a a lot of stupid moves which you jumped all over me about last summer saying i was too negative which after all ce to fruition ... Funny i never see you reference those discussions. - JoeRussomanno
No, you never said all that, but you're all gung ho about shipping Coots out for Phaneuf, so what's another few pieces.
As for last year, you want me to remember all of my discussions from last year? I don't remember what I talked about on here last week. However, when it comes to the "major" moves the Flyers made last year:
- Mason: looks like a great 1-year deal
- Emery: again, one a 1-year deal, was just fine
- Streit: Early returns look good
- Vinny: did not meet expectations
So, yes, I would say you're negative if you just want to poop over their moves. |

I was thinking the same thing at the time... JVR is about as casual as it gets. Tyler Biggs he ain't |

That's a fair point. As casual as JVR may be, I think Burke recognized the fact JVR would be a consistent 30+ goal scoring power forward. Still early to say that's what he is, but it's headed that way. Not to mention when Burke realized he was giving up a third pairing dman he must have been giddy as a school girl. |

Gotta wonder if OTT might take a look at Vinny now. Spezza will bring back a nice piece and a pick but losing Hemsky too? Theyre going to be looking pretty weak up front. |

A fair, unbiased, informed assessment at that. Very sobering. To give up a chip like JVR for what amounts to a third pairing defenseman is part and parcel with the type of moves that constantly sets this franchise back. Their biggest issue is they can't get out of their own way sometimes. Very frustrating. - PLindbergh31
Bill didn't state that Schenn is a 3rd pair defenseman. Schenn has the same issue that pretty much the team has. Inconsistency. While I agree that Schenn's skillset as a player, is not going to improve much. What can certainly change is his level of consistency. He has had stretches of games where he has been far more then a 3rd pair defenseman. When he moves his feet and is not caught stationary, or drifts to far from the play, he can be a very good defensman. If he brings his A game more consistently to the ice, the Flyers have themselves a solid top 4, 2nd pair defenseman. He could also be used as a physical compliment to a #1 at some point, if he finds that consistency. |
