for some reason I don't know I'm reading Phil Kessel trade stuff. Here's a line from Burke,
"Bringing Phil Kessel aboard, it's a statement to our players that we intend to be competitive right away"

for those that think trading the 2015 pick as a wakeup call and a message that says EDM has to compete, remember how that turned out for TOR

We're all aware of the potential pitfalls involved with trading a first round pick in a draft like next years. It doesn't take a genius to realize that any shot at a player of McDavid's pedigree should be treasured. However, we also hold the belief that the addition of a proven talent that can significantly impact the roster in a positive way is something that needs to be treasured equally. We've had enough high picks and skill players and so should you.

If there's a deal out there that brings in such a player (preferably a Dman) in exchange for a package including the 2015 1st, then I take it every day of every week ever.

I think mact has already made that mistake realized it and stepped back from the ledge. last year when he talked about this being a playoff team
- Oilerulez

Agreed and thankfully he didn't make a big trade to try and just put him slightly over the top at times no move is the best move.

I think trading two firsts was excessive at the time. Kessel and seguin pretty much break even. Not many players have scored more points than Phil in the last few years. Hamilton could make it lopsided depending how he turns out.

I'd be hesitant to trade two firsts, but one first would be ok. Only way I move two firsts In a deal is if it's in a Package for a top line centre or legit #1 dman. Nobody can critique that.

As a Philly fan would you prefer to have Couturier or Schenn and Ekblad? That's assuming Edmonton would move 3rd overall for Couturier as the main pieces in a trade.
- ystoil

Very difficult question, as much as that may surprise you.

If were trading up to get Ekblad, were likely losing more than just Couturier. That's my hesitation. Of course I'd like to the latter, but Couturier is really that highly thought of here.

He's often our best forward in games. If I'm Hextall, I don't trade Couturier unless it's for a proven young dman.

I dunno know about that ....how many goals has Kessel scored as a Leaf? For how many years ? Seguin has only been his equal for 1 season now. Not exactly a wash until Seguins career contributions equal Kessel's Leafs contributions.

Fair enough, it just looks like Seguin will keep it up especially with Benn.

Make no mistake about it- Seguin is good and will be a top center in the league... He is the type of player many would start their team around...

I think I would be tempted to trade Hall and Eberle for McDavid- likely even a more... generational talent potential is extremely rare... and likely all teams would break the bank to get a shot at him as well...

I actually think the USA guy might be a stronger player. But maybe it'll be a remake of the Crosby/Ovechkin scenario, two different style players.

No, I know what you are talking about. I guess I took it out of context. I would start a team with Toews, but if the selection was Kessel or Seguin, I would go with Seguin as well.

Where did I dispute that? I was comparing what Seguin has done since he was drafted to what Kessel has done since the trade. It's not even close.

I know, I was just saying that Kessel>Seguin for at least 3 years prior.

Why is he that good?

His numbers don't appear to be better than Tavares. Who I might add had twice the goals that McDavid did in his first 2 years.

Many compare him to Crosby and use words like 'generational'.... I dont know enough about him other than what I read - fortunately the microscope will be on him all this upcoming year...

Ya, that's what all the top picks a few years down the road are compared to. Just like Hedman, Larsson, Jones, Ekblad etc.. are all Prongers or Lidstroms in the making. Murray is suppose to be a Nidermayer. Hopkins was suppose to be a Datsyuk, Mackinnon was another Crosby.
