I hate the term "model" when it comes to this. All of the cup winners brought in elite players at one position or another, usually through the draft but not always. And that's what needs to happen here.
This isn't a knock on the blog, which was very good. |

While you are right they didn't "tank" and draft top 3 multiple years in a row, they did in fact win 2 cups because of top 5 draft picks.
Brayden Schenn was drafted 5th overall and was the main piece to aquire Richards
Doughty was 2nd overall
Jack Johnson was a former 3rd overall pick who was the main piece in getting Jeff Carter.
Bottom line is that if they don't draft top 5 or have those caliber prospects in their system they don't make the cup finals let alone win 2 |

What model is that? Tank every second year for 7 years and get a lucky run every second year? |

Don't be so hard on the Oilers they try, even with all the number 1 picks they have. |

Cap floor or no cap floor, the Sabres need to dump Leino and not worry about it counting towards the cap. Forget that s$$t and just buy him out. |

get some high draft picks, but dont shy away from bringing in veteran leadership
look at the oil, they have the youth but forget the second part. You need to bring in outside players from time to time |

People hack on the Oilers for 3 first overalls but the Avs have a #1, #2 and #3. Basically the same thing. Only difference is they had a couple years where goaltending dragged them into playoff contention. They still have glaring holes on D.
They are coming around nicely but lets not act like they did anything miraculous here. The still sucked and got a lot of very high picks.
LA as well sucked for many years. They have made trades as well but again it took them a long long time sucking to turn it round. |

we need some big trades that wont affect us getting mcdavid. I think trading ehroff is something that needs to be done at the draft. In return we should get teams top prospect or get back into late first to draft top goalie. If we could package him with someone like grigorenko for third overall to get both sam's. |

I am well aware How Colorado and LA did it . By Sucking for extended periods . More need to realize that. |

the one thing that ALL Stanley Cup teams have in common is a group of outstanding homegrown players (LA: Doughty, Kopitar, Quick, Brown, Voynov; CHI: Kane, Toews, Keith, Seabrook). drafting well won't necessarily win you a Cup, but not drafting well certainly ensures you'll get nowhere near it. |

LA was always drafting in the middle of the pack because they either just missed the playoffs or when they made the playoffs were always 7 or 8... LA I believe has had only ONE #1 draft pick in team history and if I'm not mistaken ony 2 top 3 picks, I could be wrong, but they have not had a whole lot of high draft picks on about 50 year history |

They're going to buy him out eventually. Like I said, it probably won't be until closer to the draft, especially if Murray really thinks he can convince another team to give him a first rounder in exchange for taking on its garbage and using a compliance buyout. |
