I agree. I don't see the loss of Coburn as team shattering either, as long as we get a body in return that can play similar minutes.
And that doesn't even have to be in the same deal. - mochoson
Sure. If you trade Coburn on Monday and land Erhoff or similar on Wednesday, swell. But to suggest it's no big loss is foolish |

I think making significant contributions in 2-3 years is being optimistic. I think it might be longer, like 3-5 before they are more than 3rd pair guys or PP specialists(Gostisbehere ) - Jsaquella
I think they can make some contributions. They just won't be carrying the defense. Amac and Streit shouldn't be carrying the load either. Coburn may be the most important player in regards to helping the young guys develop. |

I think a lot of that has to do with team defense too. I just don't see the loss of coburn as team shattering. I don't see if we traded anyone of our d in itself as team shattering. Team defense ( an area we all agree on) would make up for the loss of any single dman moved in a deal. IMO - Sms401

Exactly. Coburn carries a huge load, in terms of minutes and role. It'd be great if he had better hockey sense, but he's still the only guy on the roster that they can't replace from within. |

If hexy stays true to his word. No big trades build thru the draft aren't we looking at a rebuild? I'm fine with that. As long as I see progress. I think he's looking to clean up contracts and waiting for the 3 d to arrive while adding younger talent. Coburn in this senario seems ripe to be traded. Because of his trade value |

Exactly. One of the problems is that Ghost, Morin, Hagg and Alt may be better than Streit and Amac in a couple years. It would, essentially, force them into top pairing minutes. |

He's not looking to rebuild. He said he's going to put more of an emphasis on drafting and development than free agency. |

Hextall never specifically excluded big trades, he said he didn't see many big moves this summer. That would also include no dumping big contracts, wouldn't it?
Also, Hextall agrees with and intends to try and contend every year. He's not going to sit on his hands and waste 3 years of the primes of Giroux, Voracek & Simmonds waiting on good, not great, defense prospects to develop.
By build thru the draft, Hextall means no more trading picks for secondary players. It doesn't mean he's tearing down the walls |

Let's say Vinny was shipped out as a salary dump tomorrow. Our team would look something like this.
Hartnell-Giroux-Voracek
Raffl-Schenn-Simmond
Read-Couturier-Akenson
Rosehill-Laughton-Rinaldo
McGinn
Timonen-Coburn
Grossmann-Streit
MacDonald-Schenn
7th to be named later
Mason
Back up to be named later
A lot can happen during an offseason but this line up is less then impressive. Even adding a player such as Jussi Jokinen, Benoit Pouliot or Nikolai Kulemin doesn't make the group that much more great. This might sound crazy but I'm growing as concerned with the forward mix as I am with the defense mix by moving Lecavalier. I don't think filling a hole with just anything makes us an automatic better team. I think we'll have to make a trade that really makes sense for both sides with extreme caution.
These days if a cheap player makes it to free agency without buy out, it's simply because they're not good enough. Maybe I'm ignoring other factors but this is how I seem to view this upcoming class of UFAs. |

They have Bellemare too.
I think the idea is that it's easier to fix the forwards and make them a very strong unit. It's almost impossible to do that with the defenseman without blowing up the prospect pool/ future.
The best move for the defense is to make the forward more balanced and better two-way. Getting rid of VL, moving Raffl up to the 2nd line and making the 4th line better are ways to do that. |

I'm not against Coburn being dealt. But he has to be replaced or improved upon. The kids aren't going to be ready and to ask more out of Streit, MacDonald, Grossmann & Schenn is asking for trouble, sooner or later.
There are options out there. The key is to be the best, most balanced team you can be while the kids develop. Can't just make deals to make deals. |

another Original Flyer has passed... RIP Larry Zeidel - Pyzik
That's awful news, I actually worked at the shop that serviced his caddy in Ardmore for many years, and became pretty good friends with him in the process. He actually gave me an autographed card of himself, and he gave me a VHS tape of him on the don cherry show from many moons ago. He was a blast to talk to, so much energy all the time and just a pleasure to be around. RIP |

In my mind Couturier and Schenn at forward are suppose to be our rising stars. The future of this teams balance lies within these two. Then we sign unknowns like Raffl and Bellemare, while hoping for the best. Add Akenson to the mix who had some jump in the playffs but in my mind far from a perfect player but he's young. Our top prospect is Scott Laughton, who does seem promising. What Couturier, Schenn, Raffl, Bellemare, Akenson and Laughton all have in common outside of being young? They're all still very much developing. I don't like it. |
