The best move for the defense is to make the forward more balanced and better two-way. - PhillySportsGuy
I agree with this approach. It's not that improvements can't be made on the defense, but maybe the team could improve defensively more by strengthening the speed and defensive ability of their forwards while not costing them much in the way of assets

Coburn >>>>>>>> Streit, Amac, Grossmann, Schenn - PhillySportsGuy
I say it again: Grown men will weep very real tears of sorrow if they trade Coburn and don't replace him

Say what you want, I'd kill to have Tyler Myers - mochoson
The only thing you'd be killing by bringing in Myers and getting rid of Coburn is our PO chances for the next couple of seasons. |

Have to like the off season so far however small the moves seem. Nice contract with Kimo, added Bellemare and in it for Sekac. Gillick was the master at getting small pieces to make up a team. Let's hope Hextall can do the same. One thing RAJ never understood. It doesn't have to be a monster deal to help the club. |

Hey look, MacDonald played 28 minutes vs the Kings...and Steve Mason's in the locker room with a rifle named Charlene yelling out his general orders in his underwear

Erhoff isn't a replacement for Coburn, either; he'd fit nicely on the second pair, but really, you hit the nail on the head:
How in the world are we getting better by dealing our best defenseman, then replacing him with a guy who "led" the Sabres to the worst record in the league?
Sooner or later, this stuff does come back to bite you in the ass -- Coburn is just being undervalued for the hellacious minutes he eats so Mark Streit -- who I do like -- doesn't have to

Sekac's really a sasquatch, living in the mountains of Germany. He doesn't really exist. |

LOL. it's funny though, several teams think they're in the lead to get him most notably the NJ and Philly. |

I disagree. I think it's a lateral move and were not really much better in the short term.
However, thats a move you make for the long term. |

That first sentence makes me want to cry right now -- and I don't hate MacDonald
But let's call a spade a spade -- we move Coburn and eff up the return, that defense is gonna be sieve-like and the playoffs would be REAALY REALLY REALLY challenging to make

If the flyers trade coburn, the only prize the flyers have a chance of winning is Connor McDavid. - FlyersSteve118
On the one hand, we wont find someone good enough to replace Coburn's Minutes... On the other he doesn't really play his minutes it that well. His playoff performance was a pretty good indication. |

Bill said he was a bottom six guy. Maybe he'll be more, but outside of some highlights I haven't seen much of him. |

I don't think it's a knock to call MacDonald a 4/5 guy. I don't hate him, I just think he took advantage of a situation and got a contract that is more than he is worth(if not in "market value" than in real value, remember the market value once said Jeff Finger was a $3mm a year defenseman). I think there are similar guys who they could have gotten more cheaply (contract wise, not trade wise).
I don't think he played especially bad overall, but he did struggle in the playoffs. With the right partner & some adjustments he can be a decent 4th defenseman who can be used on the PK, PP and play 16-18 minutes a night without killing a team.
Prior to the playoffs, I felt Stralman would have been a better choice in UFA, and possibly could have been signed for less. Now, he's a key UFA for the Rangers to keep and almost certainly will command a big contract. The key is to find the next Stralman and get him signed for a smaller deal, not to reward a guy with a 6 year $30mm deal for being a solid guy for 14 games or so. |

Every article I read says the same thing. However if you upgrade your bottom six then maybe you can move Read onto the top 2 lines and Raffl can stay on the 3rd or 4th line for now. No more Rosehill! |

I agree, but I'd like to avoid a big deal for an unknown. If he signs for $900K, great. If he wants all sorts of potentially damaging bonuses and other perks, go find another Bellemare. |

Wouldnt mind flipping Grossmann for a pick and then flipping the pick to the Hawks for Oduya. Hawks blogger says they're shopping him. Presumably trying to clear cap space for Towes and Kane. I like what Oduya brings. |
