Because we won't have bloated salaries on this team in two years. Risto might get 4-5, Pysyk 3-4, Stafford if he's here, 3-4, Neuvirth and Enroth maybe 3 a piece. I still don't see the issue. Who else is there? I mean with those guys, getting those raises today, barely puts us over the floor. - TheSabresTaco
Those are just the players who are here. I assume other trades and signings (top picks and all that) will be made. If this team is trying to be competitive in 2 years it will probably be spending somewhere close to the cap sans Moulson. Having him there tying up valuable cap space doesn't bode well for us. |

Talent over size everyday. If you build your team on the premise that size is most important element, you'll have a pretty bad team.
If a 5'10 player is straight up more talented than someone who's 6'4 and 230 you take the under 6 foot player every time. - Sabresfan-365

Let's play on the assumption that it actually is 75 million which seems to be conservative. I guarantee the Sabres figure out a way to make it come together. I feel like some folks just see a number and
- TheSabresTaco
Or just don't want to see this team paying 7 mil a year for a fringe 3rd liner in 3-4 years(Callahan). |

And how did this fan base react when someone got paid and under preformed?
Niskanen is gonna get bank, and while I wouldn't complain seeing him get a Wisniewski like deal, he would need to produce more than Hoff did which I think is unlikely |

All I'm saying is his age fits the rebuild most out of any other UFA. In 3yrs he's Hoff's age when they signed him.
I still say just avoid the top end UFA guys at this point.

Ok, but what I'm saying is that in two years our draft picks other than Risto from 13', 14' and 15' will have extremely small cap hits. Moulson is a top 6 forward and deserves money. He's a useful player and can hardly be seen as a detriment to your cap. Unless we trade for Thorton, Marleau, Spezza and EKane and sign Cally, Moulson and PKane, which sure as poop won't happen, I honestly think this team will not hit a cap problem, especially in two years. |

See, that argument is much more valid than not wanting Moulson to get 6. |

You don't see them making a big trade in 2 years? I suspect they'll make that sort of move in the 2015 off season.
If the plan is to be bad for a while or at least much longer than 2 years than yea it's not so bad because you won't be making those kinds of trades. |

In 3yrs Moulson is more than likely a 3rd liner on this team. His foot speed isn't the greatest and is the 1st thing to go. You now have 2-3 more years of a guy making 6 on the 3rd line.
This is why I have a no more than 3yr contract for the majority of top UFA guys. |

I absolutely do. But like you said. It's a trade. And it won't be for ALL those guys, maybe none of them. I think we'll add in FA after Murray locks onto a trade target or two. We'll apply maybe two top 6 forwards with giving salary up in return. I still cease to believe we'll have any sort of cap problems for a long time. |

You may be right. But he may have enough gas to make it another 5 years without him dropping to a checking line. If that is the case, the contract is worth it. Hell, it's FA, these guys are going to get paid but they also know their age will affect the final number. |

I'm not against singing Niskanen at all. He's a solid 3-5 guy.
IMO though he will become another public enemy because he won't produce like he did in Pitt on this team |

I think the main difference here is what you and I think he may be in a few years. If he can continue to be an effective top 6 forward for 6 more years than I could see the allure (cap problems or not). Personally though, I don't think he will be which is why I hesitate to have him take up 6 mil of the cap to put up 3rd line numbers. |

IMO this isn't the offseason you go top guy UFA shopping.
Make a deal like the rumored Scuds and 22 or an Umberger deal for the short term. Look to make the splash signing maybe, maybe next offseason, but definitely the following offseason. |

yea that's what I kinda just said to DD. The way you worded this statement, I wouldn't disagree with you. There's a lot of ifs going into his next contract. If we got him for 4/20 I'd be ecstatic. |

Maybe overpay a Setoguchi type guy for 3 yrs. |

One way or the other, this team needs to obtain like 10 million dollars. There's going to be a big contract or two on the roster, and I wouldn't mind if Moulson was one of them. As far as the timeline goes, yeah, I hope we don't fingerblast the cap with pricey players for like 3 years. |

Something I learned while in the collection industry from the owner of the company, "Don't throw away good money going after bad money". That is big time UFA shopping this offseason for a team like Buffalo. |
