Bryzgalov is the best example of how the process is less a perfect market driven by supply/demand, and more a case of teams making assumptions and gambles based on imperfect information.

Flyers thought he was worth $51M... the market obviously indicated otherwise that summer. It's nothing but an exercise in perceived value.

- Tomahawk

Not true. If Bryzgalov was able to command the deal that he did, then that was the market. The only perception involved here is looking at the outcome after the fact. Instead of looking at it from the same perception as when the deal was made. Free Agency is never a guarantee. It's the nature of the beast.

So you're flat-out guaranteeing that trading for Florida's No. 1 is getting us to the Promised Land, then?

So there has been a bear on the loose in my town the past two days now. Rather than tranq and capture him they're just hoping he looses interest and leaves. Ok, if you want to try that...whatever.

Today, they parked every schoolbus in town and made parents pick up their kids directly from school. Thousands of kids. Over a goddamned bear.

Ok, back to hockey.

I'll snatch and grab it from you on Friday or Saturday... Watch ya back!!!

Maybe they'll take a chance on player who bounced back and forth from forward to D and is not playing D for good in Marcus Petterson.

He'll need plenty of time to develop while adding weight & muscle, currently listed at 6'4" 167

Nope, it's a very fluid draft, it could go in many directions.

So if one guy is willing to pay $100K for a Ford F-150, should that dictate everyone pay $100k, or does that mean one guy is badly overvaluing that F-150?

Last week we had a black bear wondering around my neighborhood as well. They finally caught him about 3 blocks from my apartment. I've also seen a few coyotes running down my street. I've seen more wildlife while living here in Portland than I did when I was living in South Jersey

Yeah. The top two goalies that summer were arguably Bryz & Vokoun. Bryz got about $4mm a year more because the Flyers were desperate and Snider's comments painted Holmgren in a corner
- Jsaquella

Yeah, need and level of desperation have everything to do with how a lot of these players are valued... nobody has any clue what the actual real objective values are until after the fact, after the dust has settled.

The takeaway is that getting overly attached to a player, or rushing into the market, usually carries severe consequences, whereas patience and prudence is often rewarded.

if one guy is willing to pay $100K for the one 2015 Ford F150 arriving in town, should that dictate that everyone pay $100K for the 10 more arriving next week? Or does that mean the one guy has no patience and deserves what he gets?

Bad analogy. That only works if the asset being bought is equal. Teams don't view players equally all the time. If one guy values that F-150 more, then he is willing to pay more. Also if there is only one F-150 available, and 2 guys want to buy one, then that will drive the price up. And certainly, any guy has the right to decline buying the F-150 if they don't like the price.
But maybe we should hold off on criticizing the guy who buys the F-150 until he's driven it for a year, and see how it works out. That way it will be easy for us to be right.

So you're saying that usually any team that signs a top free agent early in the Free Agency period, is normally met with sever consequences. While those that wait until later, after all the dust settles, is often rewarded. I say BS.

Ill go ahead and disagree with you here. I think the Flyers were impatient, misread the market, and paid way over market value for Bryzgalov. What Vokuon signed for later that offseason pretty much told us that. The Flyers essentially bid against themselves in this case. Now, this is just an opinion. And yes hindsight CAN be used to analyze their decision.

for whatever its worth, 20 years ago, the Kings drafted Tom Glavine 5 rounds ahead of Luc Robitaille.

but hey, they did select two hall of famers in the same draft.

I think you can make that case. But I think it's more that Bryzgalov was the player they identified and wanted, to shore up the goaltender spot. And in that case, the player has the leverage. And in order to keep the cap hit down, they went to a back diving contract, and added a bunch of years. The only way the Flyers could've done differently there, is if they were willing to settle for someone else, instead of Bryzgalov. Obviously he is the player they targeted, and that they felt would solve the goaltending issues. And that's the only player they were negotiating with. And at that time, that's what the market was. I don't think it's fair to look back at how the market was a month or two later, when that is not the position the Flyers were in at the time. There's no doubt that they put themselves in that position, but it was on their terms. And that's how they viewed it. In their mind they wanted a Cadillac, and were willing to pay for it. And they weren't willing to settle for the second choice of a Chevy. It didn't work out. But the only reason it didn't work out was because Bryzgalov didn't play well enough. And who's fault is that?
If I use hindsight to judge moves a team makes, I'm going to be right 100% of the time. I wish the Flyers could have the same ability.

It's also not a coincidence that Bryz (and many of the other notorious July 1 signings) end up getting bought out... the gap between real and perceived value was just too enormous to continue living with.
