He's everything you want in a D-man, he's going #1, Florida if they select him will have a really solid core on the back end going forward.
Even though they could use some wingers, there just isn't one worthy of #1 overall. - ob18
I'm sure he is, but maybe I'm wrong, but I haven't heard that Ekblad is considered a future superstar. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Only thing I could come up with that makes sense both ways.
Coots
LSchenn
17th pick
Hagg
for
Ekblad
And I'm not crazy about it either. But you keep BSchenn as you cant afford to lose him at LW. And you have Laughton to replace Coots as that's who he is best set to replace in the lineup. Idk, Its the only thing I can come up with that is both fair and makes some sense. - hereticpride
I think you are over valuing Ekblad here. He is less hyped than Seth Jones, so his value would be along the lines of Nurse/Risto from last year's draft.

I don't see how trading Carter and JVR falls under the same umbrella when looking at player contracts. Neither contract for those players were bad deals. The team just decided to go in a different direction.
And how many times have you, yourself stated that you were happy with the Carter trade? Now it's being used as an example of poor decision making by the team. Seems to be playing both sides of the fence. And if we're also going to look at the perceived bad deals, how about the good deals? No team is perfect. But the Flyers are expected to be. And I think it's about perception. If I thought MacDonald was a 3rd pair defenseman, I'd question the move also. But I disagree with that thinking. I guess we'll find out who's right.
12.1M for 3 good NHL defenseman isn't a bad deal. And if we want to talk about the highest paid defense in the NHL, we have to talk about the Pronger injury. Because if that doesn't happen, who knows what the defense would look like. Would they have dealt for Grossmann, or MacDonald. Would they have signed Streit? So to omit that, lacks context. - MJL
Not sure if I interpreted JSaq correctly, but when it came to the Carter trade example I don't think he was saying he was unhappy with what the trade yielded. Hell, I don't think anyone is upset with getting Jake, Couts, and Cousins for Carter. I think it was more about how the team gives out long-term contracts and then quickly changes course for one reason or another. When this many players have been given long-term deals and then quickly traded or shopped, it does make you wonder about the team's decision making. They appear ready to commit to a player long-term, only to change course often a couple months later. And it isn't always because another team just decides to offer you something you can't refuse. It's because the other team knows that player is available. Overall, the good does outweigh the bad however.
Edit: JSaq, if I did misinterpret what you said, my apologies. |

You'd be wrong. He had the extra benefit of being granted "special player status" and was allowed to enter the OHL at 15 and not 16 so he's got 3 years completed instead on the typical 2.
He's developed very well in that time frame. |

Swing and a miss.
It's not about bad contracts. It's about questionable decision making. Sure they made a good trade when they moved Jeff Carter. But the fact that they were actively shopping him around the NHL less than 12 months after signing him to an 11 year contract means that somewhere along they way, there was a highly questionable decision made.
That's the point I'm making. Sometimes they make some very questionable decisions. |

From his trade Florida's roster is this:
Huberdeau-Barkov-Boyes
Fleischman-Schenn-Bjugstad
Bergenheim-Shore-Hayes
4th liners
Coburn-Kulikov
Campbell-Gudbranson
Olsen-Jovo/Gilbert
Luongo
And money to spend on Gaborik, Vanek, or Moulson. To me Florida would give a long hard look at something like that. |

Nope, sums it up pretty well.
Rash decisions, quick course changes, crossing the line from being aggressive to foolish a time or two too many...it's not just bad contracts. |

I'll preface this by saying I don't know a lot about Ekblad. But no way in hell would I make that move. Ekblad would have to be a generational player. And to my limited knowledge, he's not viewed that way. - MJL
The problem is you are trading the Number one pick. For all intents and purposes, this is the star player in the League for this moment. Once this draft is done, he becomes just like anyone else. For teams that have missed the playoffs and are struggling, it's important to do well on draft day. Because this is the only chance they get to pull one over on the playoff bound teams.
If you want to move the first round pick you gotta overpay for that spotlight. Even if you just happen to want that player. Odds are we could get that pick for Both Schenns AND our 17th. But that would be too much. |
