You'd be wrong. He had the extra benefit of being granted "special player status" and was allowed to enter the OHL at 15 and not 16 so he's got 3 years completed instead on the typical 2.

He's developed very well in that time frame.

- ob18

He has developed well, but everyone I have heard says he is a step below Seth Jones in hype. Some scouts see him as more a safe top 4 than a probable top 2.

The problem is you are trading the Number one pick. For all intents and purposes, this is the star player in the League for this moment. Once this draft is done, he becomes just like anyone else. For teams that have missed the playoffs and are struggling, it's important to do well on draft day. Because this is the only chance they get to pull one over on the playoff bound teams.

If you want to move the first round pick you gotta overpay for that spotlight. Even if you just happen to want that player. Odds are we could get that pick for Both Schenns AND our 17th. But that would be too much.

- flyler

I'm not as high on Ekblad as OB18, but I think I'd move both Schenns & the 17th pick for a shot at Ekblad.

Even the draftniks that doubt him feel he will be, at worst, a good number 2 or 3 guy, playing a lot of minutes in all situations. If he tops out, you'd have a legit number one defenseman with good size and ability.

Not sure if I interpreted JSaq correctly, but when it came to the Carter trade example I don't think he was saying he was unhappy with what the trade yielded. Hell, I don't think anyone is upset with getting Jake, Couts, and Cousins for Carter. I think it was more about how the team gives out long-term contracts and then quickly changes course for one reason or another. When this many players have been given long-term deals and then quickly traded or shopped, it does make you wonder about the team's decision making. They appear ready to commit to a player long-term, only to change course often a couple months later. And it isn't always because another team just decides to offer you something you can't refuse. It's because the other team knows that player is available. Overall, the good does outweigh the bad however.

Edit: JSaq, if I did misinterpret what you said, my apologies.

My point is that you can't include trading Carter as an example of bad decision making, while lauding the trade. At least in my view.

My point is basically this. If the Flyers pay the cost to acquire the #1 pick. They better know they're getting a future superstar. As much as that is possible.

sigh

i think his point is that signing him to an 11 year deal is the questionable decision seeing as he was traded before that extension even took effect.

Step below Seth Jones is Legit number one, all star level defenseman, because Jones is seen by many as a franchise guy

Personally, I see them as 2 separate topics. One questioning the Flyers decision making with how they give out contracts (either too long, too much $$, redundant type of player, etc). In this case, trading a player a few months after you told the fanbase was part of the core by signing him to such a long extension. The other being the trade itself.

It is. I've made that clear to other posters and directly in response to him. He lives to argue semantics and beat subjects into the ground. Maybe he needs a vacation or more attention at home.

I've made my point clear, and I'm done.

sigh

I don't think the contract was a bad contract. And I don't have a problem with a team reversing course if they feel that is what is needed.

It's fun watching Leafs fans debate him. Half are screaming Tyler Biggs 2.0, the rest are more logical

How much have you seen of McKeown? I'm pretty high on the kid because his offensive game is very projectible, he has good size, a good shot, and skating is one of the best parts of his game.
