I bring up Ghost because of his family being from FLA, his national exposure in the Frozen Four, and long-term a replacement for Campbell.
I guess my basic premise is if Ekblad is considered a true blue chip defensive prospect, a high price shouldn't be a deterent, especially for this organization. Of course, he better turn out to be Doughty and not become another Bogosian. To your point, what would be a fair draft pick exchanged? A 4th in this year's draft? - ravishingone
You're giving up 2 roster players, a top prospect and a 1st round pick. Thats pretty much the package you give up for a legit #1 defenseman. |

I am the last guy to give an opinion on evaluating what a prospect will become at the NHL. However, if Hexy evaluates Ekblad is that guy, you have to pay the price. As we've seen, guys in the NHL who are legitimate #1's or darn close just aren't available unless they're on the wrong side of 30. From what I've read, Ekblad will probably be playing in the NHL, so you would be getting a top 6 d-man for the upcoming season.

You can't give up that kind of package for a prospect. That kind of package could bring in a guy like Subban |

It is indeed. Of course, if Ekblad does reach what some believe is his potential, it'll be worth it.
Russ Cohen who co-hosts a prospects show on XM radio and writes about the draft at sportsology.com feels that Ekblad could be better than Jones. It's obvious just one opinion, but even if he doesn't reach the full potential, he's seen as a safe bet to be a solid NHLer at worst. |

I would need a more proven player to part with that kind of package. Every prospect is a roll of the dice.
I would trade that package for McDavid, but I would have a hard time trading that package for a defensive prospect. |

When in the last 20 years has that deal been accomplished to get a franchise d-man in his prime? I can't think of an example outside of Phaneuf (Toronto gave up garbage)and Johnson. I agree the risk is very, very high, but you have to trust your scouting staff that they'll be right. |

I doubt the Schenns, Gostisbehere & 17 get you PK, but I understand your point. I'd very much prefer a proven, but young, NHLer. |

That's a good counterpoint.
Also, Ekblad saves you some cap room for at least a couple years |

The risk is ridiculously high. In fact, Hexy's career as GM will be pretty much defined with such a move. However, I contend with the value placed on true franchise d-men, the only realistic way to acquire one is to draft one. Certainly, an exception could occur, but it is so few and far between. |

You're right there is risk. However, I'll counter those guys with Doughty, Pieterangelo, and Hedman all drafted within the top 5 and are either studs or pretty darn close. |

Booth and Tootoo bought out today.
My guess is these players are next...
Brad Richards
Mike Richards
Ryan Malone
Ville Leino
Brooks Laich
Martin Havlat
Alex Tanguay
Sheldon Souray
Adam McQuaid
RJ Umburger (How the heck do they trade this guy?)
Scottie Upshall
Shawn Horcoff
Ed Jovanovski
Paul Gaustad
Anton Volchenkov
If I'm the Penguins, I would buyout Pascal Dupuis in favour of re-signing Jussi Jokinen or Matt Niskanen.
Also Antti Niemi wasn't very good this year. |
