How so? - mickel25
If a player elects to retire, he does not get paid. |

Pronger gets paid on the contract whether he retires or not. He signed it after he turned 35. If he was 34 it is a different story. - mickel25
TECHNICALLY he signed it while he was still 34. |

Kind of fun to look into the past. The Giroux draft - eayost
I enjoyed where Erik Johnson was implicitly referred to as a sure thing. |

Exactly. If Marc Streit stopped playing hockey right now the Flyers would not owe him a cent. |

He seems like a case of a player being rushed. He's finally turned into a top-pair defenseman, but I think his immediate growth may have been stunted by being placed in a position to fail right out of the gate.
Edit: I'd much rather have him than a guy like Niskanen, Bogosian, or Campbell, even at the elevated hard asset (player/prospect/pick) cost. |

I'm not really a fan of him. I'm not really a fan of paying over $2M for 4th line talent - PhillySportsGuy
Don't worry, its just Ek
Just cause his Ott dart landed on the Flyer board is no reason to get concerned
I could see Homer maybe going after him, but not Hextall. |

He was really good out of the gate... lost his mojo for awhile... seems to have gotten it back. Still... he's not going to come anywhere close to scratching his pre-draft ceiling.
Even if the Flyers had 1st-overall this year, I'd be really gun-shy about taking Ekblad. |

It counts against the cap if he retires, but he would not get paid. This is why Marc Savard has not retired despite starting his contract when he was 33. - Feanor
So Pronger gets paid and he does the Flyers a solid by not retiring and providing LTIR allowance. Win-Win to me. |

Correct. The 35+ rule is so teams couldn't sign a 35+ deal for say 7 years to lower the cap hit and then have said player retired in 3 years. If you retire you don't get paid but the cap hit on a 35+ deal stays. Also 35+ deals can be incentive laden i believe |

If Pronger retired due to the injury, wouldn't insurance somehow come into play though? He'd still get some of the money? |

Nope, the insurance only covers him as long as he is playing. If he took out a separate insurance policy with his own out-of-pocket money, that's a different story. |

So besides the Ott rumour, Ek is reporting we want Nabokov (are we taking everyone from the Islanders?), and he has us as inviting Leino to camp (as what? a water boy?) All kidding aside, Leino might have something left but yeah not particularly interested...
It also seems more and more likely that Emery is gone. - FlyersGrace
So the Nabokov dart landed on the Flyer board too? |

Basically, as long as a player is under contract, there is never an incentive to retire due to injury regardless of age. |

That would depend on if Pronger had an insurance policy out agains the contract. The premiums for something like that are very high. |

Now that the contract rules in the CBA allow much less back diving on contracts (can only decrease 10% or something each season), I think they should reexamine this 35+ thing in regards to injury. We can agree that Pronger does effect the Flyers ability to go over the cap by 10% in the offseason right? Essentially lowers their tagging space? |

Oh I know. I kind of laugh. Like looking back. When the Flyers traded Williams for markov the Flyers needed a d and were making a run at the cup. Yes after the years have gone by that looks bad but at the time no one was compaining when the flyers were trying to win the cup and needed to sure up the d.
Bryz deal looks bad after the fact but how many people were wanting a number one goalie. it wasn't like Bryz was a one hit wonder. He played well in PHX and ANA. People were finally hopeful that we got a guy. Who knew playing in the large market he was a headcase.
MacDonald got a fair deal imho. Would people prefer we resign Gervais instead of Macdonald because they feel 5mil is too much?
Let's trade Grossmann for a bag of pucks because he doesn't skate like McDoughnah but then don't complain if mason has traffic all game because we gave up size. - J35Bacher
well said.

Classic Ek gem:
"On the BIG IMMINENT TRADE...
Sounds spooky... All I can say is if it happens it looks like it is out off Ontario....meaning Spezza or Phaneuf...but that is just a guess at this point based on who is telling me about this one. I am also getting sparse info which usually means the deal is very close. As always, things can fall apart, but to this point I am told nothing has fallen apart yet...but obviously NOT done." |

Even if the 35+ rule was not in effect, Pronger still would not retire. |
