I'd be fine starting the season with the following roster, and it would have the added bonus of hurting the Rangers too!

Why was Foster needed in January of 13 when a stud like Lilja was stashed away with the Phantoms? - PLindbergh31
Wasn't Schenn our only NHL defenseman that year at one point? Also I think they wanted some sort of shot on the PP since they didn't really have one. Foster wasn't a terrible player until he broke his femur on that icing play. |

The thing is teams don't trade number one dmen for just picks. They aquired guys like Streit, MacDonald and Grossmannn to fill roles since there are no number one dman out there. They put their best effort forward with the OS to Weber. - J35Bacher
True, they don't. At the same time, had those picks been kept, the Flyers might have a few options on the farm that are cheap and ready to step in.
That's where my issue lies, while the Flyers do an overall good to very good job of icing a competitive team, the asset management could be even better. I like the aggressiveness and trying to win every year, but I'd like to see it tempered a bit.

Exactly
I'm pretty sure if they Flyers could go back to 82, they'd take Scott Stevens over Ron Sutter. The draft is a crapshoot, giving up a ton of assets for any prospect short of a Mario Lemieux type of franchise forward is extremely risky. - BiggE
That's why it baffles me to hear talk of trading Brayden Schenn in a deal for another draft pick -- hell, you're already lucky that Schenn has made it to the NHL and produced and looks like he could still develop a bit more. But you're eager to hit on 18 or 19 just to see if you can beat the house again? |

When Foster was signed, the only guy hurt was Meszaros. When Gervais was signed, it was July. The injuries piled up in the middle of the season. |

Tempered a bit? So you only want to win a little? Just enough to be close to the payoffs but not really make it? |

Yeah, they were definitely signed to be part of the top-6.
The problem wasn't that they went out and got RH'ers after the Jersey series... it was that the pro scouts/management picked the wrong (frank)ing guys. |

Yup
Sure, if Florida is willing to swap the 1st overall pick for just B. Schenn, you do the deal. But we all know that they are going to want MUCH more and it's just not worth it.

I would trade Schenn but only if the return is Weber, Subban or maybe someone like Bogosian who could be a top guy. |

I think by tempered he means not just blindly giving up all your picks and prospects to win now at any cost. No one wants them not to be competitive, but taking the occasional step back to make a big leap forward is not a bad thing. |

My original point being that I hear too many people saying the Flyers will try to make some sort of splash simply because the draft is in Philly. It is absolutely asinine to suggest it, yet it is everywhere. - MBFlyerfan
Oh I agree with you completely. |

Killorn (TB) just signed for 2 years at $2.55 million per season. He had 41 points in 82 games. |

Plus, that was when the league totally changed, and the Flyers had to adjust -- teams just stopped trading defensemen of consequence unless they were at risk of them leaving for nothing. And Nashville even risked that, by letting Ryan Suter play out his final season rather than trading him for anything they could get.
The Flyers, for years, had traded for their NHL defensemen. The league changed, and they've adjusted. |

How deep did adding MacDonald get the Flyers last year? They were pretty much a lock to make the playoffs when he was added. He was a slight upgrade to a team with little more than a puncher's chance to make a deep playoff run
Rather than augment an already flawed team with yet another flawed player, they could have stood pat & had more draft picks in the next couple years. Win now is great, teams should try to win. But they should also look at things realistically and with an eye to a few years down the road, not just a few months.
EDIT: in Holmgrens time as GM he made 3 second round picks. When guys like Subban, Weber & Keith are taken in the 2nd round, I'd say it's important to hang onto those picks, rather than trade them for depth guys |

I think it has more to do with selling the future for the possibility of a win now. It's a tough line to walk and the Flyers tend to go for the "win now" mentality. Conservatism is not their strong suite. It's one of the reasons that they keep fans though so it is definately a delicate line to walk. |

Ok. I was trying to figure out what tempered was. But you can't always bank on taking a step back to get better. Hasn't EDM routinely been keeping prospects and high picks. When does their charge on the league start. |

That should be the top end, not the floor, to me -- and I like the guy and want him on the team.
But Hextall needs to hold the line, here. |
