He had the math right though for LA. I knew what he meant. - Buffalo-Sabres
I get where he was going, but the number is greatly skewed since there is actually only 3.8 million people, not 385 million people. |

They mentioned right at the end of the season he'd been dealing with a shoulder issue. I think they wanted to try and just rehab it, but it sounds like that must not have been working.
Do you know when he had the surgery? - HonkFortheGoose
Must have been just recently. Today's the first day I heard of it.

thank you for pointing this out.
LA 385,000,000 x .05 = 198,000
BUF 352,000 x .08 = 28,000 - JCSabs06

Actually Buffalo metro area viewership would read slightly over a Million people.
1,000,000 x .08 = 80,000 roughly.
Los Angeles having nearly 5 times the population had only slightly more than double the amount of viewers. - Buffalo-Sabres
not sure where the 1,000,000 came from. I cant find numbers anywhere close to that. Im actually finding numbers far, far less.
LA's viewship for game 5 was 12.4% or roughly 477,000. |

Buffalo metro area for TV viewship is roughly a Million people give or take. Im not sure what the exact # Nielsen has us at.
So if Buffalo had 8% of viewers it would be roughly 80,000 people.
I didn't see any reports of LA having any viewer ship #'s in the 12%. Do you have a link to that? |

I would imagine it has something to do with the population of the suburbs and stuff as well. I haven't looked myself, but that would be my guess. |

If we are going to include that, i think we are going to have to up that LA number quite a bit.

Holy poop they have them at over 11 Million people!
Could you imagine if they cared about hockey like we do? That would be dangerous. |

Yea so
11,000,000 * .12 = 1,364,000 or > Buffalo's entire population.

Yet when you look at the TV ratings in general, no matter what team it is, Buffalo is usually toward the top.
Like when there were more people in Buffalo that watched game 7 of the WCF than there were in LA. - HonkFortheGoose
Right, but as was indicated in the NY Times article a couple of weeks ago, those ratings are merely percentages. While Buffalo has the higher Nielsen number, the same number of households, or more, are still watching in those bigger markets. That's what the advertisers want to see.
EDIT: I see I haven't refreshed in a while. |

What gets me, though, is why certain areas, such as Greenville/Spartansburg, Birmingham/Tuscaloosa, or Albuquerque/Santa Fe are combined, but areas like Buffalo and Rochester are not.
You can easily manipulate those sizes. If you combined the two, it would vault Buffalo to #31. |

I would have to assume distance.Birmingham/Tuscaloosa are only 45 miles apart.
Roch/Buf is almost 70.
Only explanation i can think of. |

Chara is declining, not that he isn't still very effective, but his best years are behind him. Teams are exploiting him quite a bit, especially in the playoffs. In fact, Chicago wasn't shy last year in saying they found something in his game that they could exploit.

Just the thought of a 30th-place team trading for Chara is preposterous to me. |

Apparently, it has more to do with market shape and centrality. Basically, you can't make a coherent "shape" of the markets in some of those combo cities where people watch more than 50% of one type of channel or another. In other words, there's a defined number of people that can and do watch only Buffalo broadcast (AKA over the air) channels, and another area where it's only Rochester. I guess that makes sense because I have a fairly powerful antenna on my roof, and the only time I can get Rochester channels is when it's really hot and humid, and the signal doesn't last very long. |
