I would have said the same thing, and yes it would have been a mistake.

The problem in the NHL is emotional spending on free agents. IMO only maybe 8 skaters in the whole league are worth 7 mil a year yet(according to cap geek) 35 guys that or better. So many problems with giving guys that much money. For one giving one guy 7 mil + doesn't make the guys around him better. In fact, depending on the person the pressure might hurt that player. That or Villie Leino syndrome kicks in. Then there is the now lack of cap room to round out the team. Ultimately the results are disappointing in many cases and the bottom line directly affects the fans.

Big time free agency does not work out well most of the time !

I think the NMC/NTC should have to be earned. Guys should have to have been with their current team for a certain amount of years prior to being eligible for them. They should not be something that teams can use as part of a package to entice a free agent.

This is a great idea, except guys get traded all the time, so you may have a player that's been traded 4 times in 6 years and wont have an opportunity to accrue any time with any one team

Well, obviously it doesn't have to be quite so cut and dry. Besides, a guy that's been traded that often, probably isn't going to get a NTC/NMC anyway.

NTC's should be limited to a max of 4 teams. If the NHL is so great and your making millions, what reason do you have to say you wont play for 8 of its 30 teams?

In theory, you are correct. However, changes had to be made to the structure of contracts to help prevent cap circumvention. If there's something a GM can pull out of his bag of tricks that doesn't have a rule saying he can't, we've seen they can and will use it.

At this point so many medicare players have some type of NMC/NTC you could make a guessing game out of players who do and dont.

(UPDATE: Pat Steinberg of the FAN 960 in Calgary reports that Wideman's contract also includes a full no-movement clause. Wideman is now the 10th player on the Flames roster who has either a no-trade or no-movement clause in their contract.)
