Oh you're gonna get eaten alive for this one. Although I've seen malhotra mentioned a couple times today. Never considered him but I would take him on the forth line. He's a battler. - stackthepads
Yeah, pretty bad roster dude...I like Malhotra though, would be a small cap hit, and would be a big upgrade to the bottom line, PK and grit. Great locker room guy as well, or so I have heard. |

Bad moves all the way around on one trade you don't like. I get it's an unpopular trade idea. But you went off the deep end attacked my character then said what I presented would be terrible. And yet you have yet to explain you side of the argument beyond you don't agree with one trade.
If we could pull off all the trades I presented which we can't, anyways we would be coming away with Yakupov who is going to be a 1st line winger and much better than Bennett. Kane who is already a top line winger who is better than Bennett and Kesler who is already a top line winger or center who is already better than Bennett.
The 22nd pick in this draft has a much better chance of never playing in the NHL then becoming a contributing member, he will certainly not contribute in the Crosby/Malkin era.
Pouliot could be a top end dman and could come back to haunt us if we trade him. I fully agree. But I think it's worth him for another realistic crack at the cup. - stackthepads[/quote
Pouliot could very easily be a top six D-Man by January. Bennett could very easily be a top six player by October. Why trade both and a first for a thirty year old center?...of which we already have three good centers.
I never criticized your character. I am likely the most passive person on this board, hell, this website. If it came off that way, my apologies. Your initial trade including those three was bad, and I posted my opinion. |

Just getting around to reading this, and I like Ryan'a roster. The best part about the bottom six, and especially the 3rd line is that any of those guys can move up in a game or a stretch of games due to injury. Last season with guys like Chuck Kobasew, Craig Adams, Tanned Glass, etc, you didn't have that.
I didn't read all of the pages, but I saw some comments about this team not being hard to play against. A team like that IS hard to play against. Top 2 lines can keep you hemmed in your zone for entire shifts, and that third line is a forechecking dream. Not guys like Tanner Glass who get to a defensiveman after he moves the puck and rattles the glass. That's great for the crowd, but guys like Dupuis and Stempniak can get there a half second earlier and create turnovers. Dupuis is one of the most tenacious and strongest forecheckers in the league.
Then throw that 4th line out there, and those wings can skate with any opponent, but also drive 3rd pairing defenseman nuts with their speed. |

i'm sorry but is that not the same team that just lost a 3-1 lead to NY? The same team that got outworked and outhustled by Columbus? I blame the coach more than anyone of course but i just dont see how this addresses the key issues at hand
1. Crosby was man handled last year and no one could do anything about it on the ice. So you put Hemsky there? What stops the same thing from happening again?
2. Neal with Malkin leads to a lesser Malkin in the offensive zone. IF, and i dont think you should, but if you keep Neal, I'd put him with Crosby and Kunitz with Malkin again.
3. The bottom 6 is essentially the same thing as it was last year minus a couple bums only to be replaced with more bums plus Dupuis who is coming off ACL surgery. javascript:void(0);
4. Not one team will be afraid of a line featuring Megna and Gibbons. Why? Because all they do is get the puck and then turn it over because any average NHL player is capable of knocking them off the puck. Putting AHL talent on a roster makes 0 sense to me.
I'm good with the defense though. Been saying for a while to let the kids play.

Kunitz-Malkin-Kulemin

I'm not a Ron Cook fan in the least but his views are how I exactly feel regarding the front office currently. If this was happening to another team I would be laughing at the incompetence. Unfortunately it's the Penguins who are inexplicably looking like a franchise with no idea what is going on.

The kids have got to play. It is Shero's debacle that they all are on defense. How many of them are #1 or #2 picks? There is no other way around it. Sink or swim.
If need be, keep shuffling the Wilkes Barre crew until someone proves they belong. There is still Sammuelson, Ruopp, Pouliot,etc...
I still think Engo should be retained and kept on as a 4th line winger. Forget defense. In his limited time up front he potted a few....heck of a lot better than Adams and Glass. Anyways, just as some beef during the regular season since in all likelihood the dream power forward will not be coming to the Penguins.
Youth is the only thing that can turn this team into a legitimate Cup threat.

Posted this a few threads ago, but I still like it.
Done without trades or buyouts at $70M Cap w/ $525K space left over. Key is Bennett, Megna, Maatta, Despres, Dumoulin, & Bortuzzo all on sub-$1M contracts.
Reasoning:
- Matt Moulson: Has shown he can play with a skilled C in Tavares & has a bit of an edge to his game. I think he would add an element of grit to the Penguins that Jokinen does not.
- David Moss: For size. Isn't going to light it up on O, but has been a consistent 20pt player on Phx. Not sure who else to slot into the 3RW position. Could swap with Megna on the 4th line maybe?
- Dominic Moore and David Brodie: Size & sandpaper.
- Gibbons and Adams as spares.
FORWARDS
Chris Kunitz ($3.850m) / Sidney Crosby ($8.700m) / Pascal Dupuis ($3.750m)

i doubt engelland is looking for a 4th line role which is why we're the few even discussing it, but i think he would be a solid option on wing. he played pretty well in the small sample size but i'm sure he'll be looking for a defensemen role come july 1st.
the penguins need that hunger back and most of all they need to have fun playing the game and what better way than a group of hungry, young, and energetic kids. not 34 year old craig adams or tanner glass, but young kids looking to make it in the league. |

Issue #1 is a huge problem with this team and will not be corrected this summer. Finding grit (or the 90's term muckers and grinders) is not easy.
I like the idea of giving the WBS guys a look. We have enough experienced players to let that happen. I think with a little less rope we will be surprised at how good some of these players are. |

Hemsky comes in, can't figure it out with Sid. Moving Duper up to the 1st line after 10 games. Hemsky goes to Malkins line and Bennett goes to third line. Bennett's hand falls off, Gibbons moves to third line and Adams comes in on the fourth line, this board says every day that Adams should not dress the next game. that leaves us
Dup-Crosby-Kunitz
Hemsky-Malkin- Neal
Gibbons-Sutter-Stemp
Adams-Goc-Megna
Someone is always going to be hurt on D meaning Scuderi is going to be playing most of the time. Bortuzzo is going to be playing over one of the rookies. This is a very realistic lineup, its soft as butter and the easiest team in the league to play against but it is realistic. |

Tight, tight, tight!
Kule might be cheaper than that, Hemsky might be more expensive. Goc might be more or less than that too. Everyone on the roster is a positive possession player apart from Scuds. Bortuzzo and Despres bring the snarl from the back end, and with Dumo that's 3 x 6'4, 210+ D-men. Pretty good balance on the pairs and Scuds is kept around for practice, experience, injuries and to help the coaches. |

Announcing to the hockey world that you're nothing but a lame duck was a monumental mistake. That was incredibly dumb on so many levels.
How about when JR comes out and says ownership wanted Dan gone? Right after Mario and Burkle come out and says there's a chance Dan could keep his job. Nothing like making your new employers look like dishonest rats. I'm starting to really understand why Shero fleeced this fool a couple of times.
I'm telling you.... This has David Morehouse written all over it. He was nothing but a lousy politician in his last job. Arrogance and lying....two traits that accompany virtually every politician. |

Good article and good posts by everyone.
Key takeaways:
1. Pens can field a better, deeper roster than they had last year without moving key pieces.
2. Youth on D. About time.
3. Most rosters still a bit soft but most were good possibilities that could certainly be tweaked during the year or at the deadline.
4. A lot of the rosters went very close to the cap. I think you need to leave a million or so to play with during the year for injuries and the ability to take on payroll at the deadline.
5. A lot depends on what Sutter is going to want. The closer he gets to $4, the more hesitant I get w/him.
6. Those with Hemsky on the roster, how many years you signing him for? Big difference between 3 and 5 years. |

So dve reported that rossi has talked with some ufas and was told that pittsburgh isn't even on their radar bc of the way the offseason has been in the media. Now take it with a grain of salt bc it's rossi but that is what I was afraid of...
I really hope JR tries to get hemsky and kulemin rights before draft and maybe get a deal done. I know that would help during the draft if a team offers up something good for neal kuni sutter etc... it would be easier to say yes knowing they picked up 2 top 6 guys...
I'm just excited it's draft week!!! Can't wait to watch....I mean listen... I mean read txts about what happened while at pirates game with wife for anniversary. .. |

Likely Rossi creating drama to "report" about later...
But no UFA's are going to commit to anything without a coach in place. But if a coached is named in the next couple of days, there is time to salvage the UFA push. |

No surprise here. As I've stated in previous posts, I believe the Pens have tarnished their brand with this GM/Coach debacle.
I don't think the Pens can afford to trade any draft picks for anyone's rights. They need every pick they can get.

Promote Hines, keep JM, bring in Tochett as assistant. Done.
Then put some duct tape over JR's mouth and tell him to keep his business private. |

This is one of the best I have seen so far. LIke it. Love moving Neal for multiple pieces. That's what I've been preaching.
You also have cap space to add 4th line pieces at the deadline or a vet d-man. How about Vitale out and Goc in? Just a thought...
Only issue...why would Anaheim make that deal? They are kind of in the same boat we are in. 2 guys taking up good chunk of cap. They need as many guys playing on ELC's and cheap contracts as we do. |

After watching Neal play live w/o 71 I lost all faith in him. So slow and just blended in with 4th liners. Tie that in with his antics and Id like to see him gone. He has tremendous value, he could net a nice return. |

I can't remember too many specifics but it's interesting that a guy like Goligoski was ranked 10th. Eric Tangradi was ranked 2nd. Talbot was really low as well. Not sure that says anything in particular about the current prospects other than we should expect the current rankings to be pretty inaccurate. |

This is very similar to the roster I came up with but I traded Neal to ANA for Cogliano and Etem. I really like the potential of 2 good young pieces for Neal as long as they are ready to play in the NHL immediately. Anaheim has some good pieces as mentioned in Palmeri, Etem, Smith-Pelly, and Cogliano. IMO, I think a team like Anaheim could use Neal. No matter what negative light we paint him in. Every team could use a top goal scorer and a powerplay sniper. And I think its likely most teams are stubborn enough to think they can turn around the antics and make him more disciplined. I think there is a trade to be made somewhere there.
In regards to this specific roster, I wouldnt pay that much for Moulson. And would look to replace Fleury. Other than that, I like it.

- 87_71_11_29
Anaheim is looking for top 6 help, as noted by their pursuit of Spezza and Kesler. Despite of what people think of him, if Neal is made available, he will be one of the best available top 6 wingers on the market. |
