Yea but there in lies the problem. If they can't pick up a point vs. Germany, the US no longer control their own fate. They have to rely upon a specific scoreline.

The even bigger problem is that both Portugal and Ghana have something to play for, neither team is going for the tie because neither team benefits from it. If Ghana had say already been eliminated I would agree.

Both teams will be super offensive in their match, which usually means plenty of chances and mistakes, someones going to end up losing that game.


Edit: I suppose both Germany and the US could mutually agree to exchange goals then call it a game, would guarantee both of them a place in the next round. However, I think both teams would rather come out on top and face Algeria instead of being the runner up and having to face Belgium.

goal diff is the tie breaker, right now US is +1, Ghana is -1, so ghana wins by 1 they go to 0 GD and US lose by 2 then its -1 so ghana advances

if goal differential is the same then it is who scored the most goals

no idea what happens if thats the same, haven't really checked

In that scenario the US advances:

"If two or more teams are equal on the basis of the above three criteria, their ranking will be determined as follows:

d) greatest number of points obtained in the group matches between the teams concerned"

The US win against Ghana gives them that edge.


Us needs to keep the score line in check vs Germany and hope Ghana doesn't show up.
