honestly, i thought hartnell was headed for a demotion from the top lines anyway.

so now youll at least have a 10M fourth line for less years.

maybe they really actually did want umberger back. who knows. but if it was purely a salary deal, then the illusions of vinny yielding some legitimate assets need to be banished for good.

Bag of used pucks and a few rolls of tape
Maybe a cracked stick too

In an expanding cap world, worst case they buy him out (RJ) and get cap relief of at least 3 mill a year at the cost of 1.6 mil per, rather than the remainder of Hartnells contract. I dont see them having a 10 mil 4th line, unless its the 3rd defensive pair, which they are close to now.

I feel RJ is better leader to have on the ice for our younger guys to look up to. Hartsy was a punk compared to RJ
- arichardson22

Hartnell is a good guy. He just has a ton of bad habits on the ice and it clearly wasn't going to fly under Berube.

Swapping out Hartnell for Umberger may hurt the team offensively a bit(I think people are blowing that way out of proportion). It will make the Flyers tougher to play against. Umberger is a very soundplayer in his own end. Hartnell was not.

MOAT will bounce back as long as we keep Simmonds.
If Simmonds goes too there will be a great deal of hair tearing and gnashing of teeth from Angry Town.

"This trade perplexes me, unless it is the first of multiple moves."

RJ is a much more versatile and defensive player than Hartnell. He can play on PP as well as SH. He takes way less penalties. RJ can play multiple positions.

The bottom line is that the organization feels he is a better fit for this team.

They prob feel that the team is lacking this type of player since they lost Mike Richards. RJ and Bellemare are both players that can help out defensively.

I think B Schenn is now the #1 LW, at least for the moment.

I could see an argument for Read too, but not sure he works as well as Schenn.

- Marc D

If they aren't moving B Schenn for a defenseman, then he'll play LW, 2C Couturier, and 3C RJ. If you want B Schenn to take that next step, put him in a place to succeed.

I dont know how either are on the ice.. But I know Hartsy was a team favorite (among the players)... I just hope it works out.

I think Hexy is going the right thing by letting the youngers move up and take the share.

Worse case scenario?

Our 3rd line is realllllly good and we lose some scoring punch / personality.

Its a lateral move. A little less cap, a little less years, a little less goals, for more versatility.

Its not the end of the world. Some acting as if we just traded John Leclair or something.

When Umberger is playing RW on our 4th line and Hartnell is putting up 60 points with Johansson, remember this moment.

I imagine they got Hartnell to play on their top line. 60 points is high, but I see him getting at least 50

This had to be a mutual thing.

Hartnell had a NMC. He doesn't just waive it "just because". Can't help but wonder what was said in the year-end conversations between Berube and Hartnell.

He wont put up numbers with any of their other centers. It's a good move for them too.
