This kind of reminds me of the Gagne trade......
- Trading a fan favorite and player that bleeds orange and black (check)
- Supposedly trading for cap relief only to be getting a player who is making almost the same amount of money (Check)
- poopty and under market return (Check)
And just like the Gagne trade, I'm stuck here saying whats the point. You got rid of a player that fans love for nothing great in return and I would argue even more of a problem. If they wanted cap relief then just trade him for picks and a prospect and call it a day. Umberger doesn't fill any of the holes we needed filled, his cap sucks and with Hartnell gone, we have one bigger hole that needs to be filled.
disappointed..... - Jack-Meoff
To me the difference is Umberger will actually contribute to the NHL team whereas Matt Walker had trouble holding down a third pairing spot so much so that they buried him in the minors.
I'm not thrilled with this trade but I don't exactly hate it. Given Umberger's versatility I think the Flyers have a lot more options with the top 9 now. Plus he nearly matched Hartnell's goal output. |

Brayden Schenn - Marc D
If Schenn is on the top line, he will easily put up 30+ goals. Top PP, top line. However, I still think he is a better fit at center. |

Same... don't imagine he's knocking Jenner or Horton from Johansen's line. |

Hartnell can be annoying, but, by the end of the season, he always puts up good numbers and finds his way onto the top PP and the top line. - PhillySportsGuy
I think this has a lot to do with the way Hextall was with the Kings and berubes system. Very detailed and with attention to the defensive side and good skating. |

With Columbus' roster he isn't going t put up 60 points anywhere other than their top line. - hereticpride
Most players won't. 2nd line wingers rarely put up 60 points. I think he'll be just as productive with Columbus as he was with the Flyers. Same goes for Umberger. |

Hartnell will be playing with Anisemov or Dubinsky but even that is a stretch. |

hartnell has been a tremendous player for many years. i dont mean to discredit all that he has done, because it has been substantial, and over a fairly large amount of time. but for whatever reason i just think he is trending alarmingly in the wrong direction.
ill give you he was always a total pain in the ass, but never really a dirty guy. and a gem off of it. i hold no ill will towards him. i just think that deal, given the direction he was trending, was going to be murderous. |

Well for the most important question, who where's the A now that Hartnell's gone? Simmonds, Streit, Voracek, Coburn? Dare I say, Couturier? |

Again why did it have to be a player that has already played here? The negatrons and lazy journalists will be all over that. I agree with you. What is the point of this deal? I guess Hartnell did not fit in the plan? |

Couldn't we be over-valuing Hartsy, too?

Streit or Coburn I'd imagine. Whoever doesnt get it this year gets Kimmo's next year. |

I find the trade a little peculiar, but I will give hextall the benefit of the doubt until I decide to jump to conclusions. |

Am I the only person who looks at this and goes....
"We knocked two years off a long term deal"
....and thinks...."win".
Cause quite frankly, I don't care much for Hartnell or Umberger as players really. But if I knew they were making similar money and I would pick one guy, it's Umberger everytime. Way more versatile and a much better skater. |

Wow....not surprised Hartnell gone....but I'm not overly excited about Umberger .....I agree with those saying that both guys needed to move but I liked Hartnell....maybe not on first line....but I'm a tad surprised.....hopefully means Schenn gets first PP time....let's face it if that was the plan then Hartnell would have been lucky to get 30 pts next year...what would his trade value look like if that happened ?
As well 3 vs. 5 years left on deal....just another poorly structured Holmgren deal that Hextall is trying to get out from under. |
