All kidding aside, this deal will most likely not help the team next season, and I'm ok with that. I took Hextall seriously when he said that we may need to take a step a back to move forward. Unlike some on this thread, I don't think the Flyers are just a move or 2 away from being a top contender, but rather that they are a middle of the pack team that is most likely 2 or 3 years away from being a top club.
If that is how Hextall feels as well then I can understand this move, because he is thinking about the make up of the team and their cap situation in 2 or 3 years, not next year.
Like I've said before, what's the worst thing that can happen next year? Missing the playoffs? Well then we have a lottery pick in what is shaping up to be an extremely deep draft featuring at least 2 franchise players. I can live with that. - BiggE
I agree. I also feel this was probably a deal based on the new system. It is more predicated to skating and defense and they might feel Umberger is a better fit. We have to wait and see. If Hextall swings a couple more deals, ala move Vinny, upgrade wing, then we will all be saying a different thing.

Pretty sure Mason would have just shot himself if he had to put up with Justin Shultz and Hartnell on the ice at the same time.
Hell, the Oilers have tried to have Schultz play a hybrid position between D man and forward because he is so bad in his own end. Do not want. |

Not even close to what we need, but I'll certainly take him depending on the cost.
Tons of puck moving ability and a righty. |

Hell no. Right now, we're paying $4.6M for a guy who couldn't crack the offense of a team weaker at offense than we are in the most important game in franchise history. He was likely going to be bought out, and we could have likely had him and retained 50% of Hartnell for less than his cap hit for the next 3 years,
As for the last 2, I'll just use what everyone else says and say, "Well, with the cap assuredly increasing $55M every year, it won't matter in 4 years." |

Hexy said we may have to take a small step back in order to take a giant leap. Not a great trade, but I get it. Less years, more versatility. I get it. Culture change. I mean, their numbers past couple years are close enough. It's not like we traded Giroux(90 point player) for Gaustad(30 point player). |

Greztky was only good because he played with Kurri and Robitaille. - jmatchett383
Obviously... But the guy consistently put up 20+ goals, with multiple line combinations, and hardly missed time with injury. Is he cooked? Possibly but to discredit his body of work is a copout at best. |

Maybe they just thought RJ was a bad matchup?

If its about culture change i need to have hextall explain exactly what change we're going for. Otherwise this move is dumbfounding because theres cheaper players like umberger out there. |

Okay. What else has he done since we've let him go? You want to talk about a guy whose production has "fallen off?" Go check Umberger's stats from his first 3 years in Columbus to the last 2. But he's not Hartnell, so OF COURSEhe'll rebound and regain his old form, I'm sure. And it's a sure thing that Hartnell will never ever be any good ever again. |

True, but we moved a guy with 5 years left who had a NMC. We got back 3 years on a guy people view as "not as good". But maybe Hartnell didn't buy into the system. Berube had been hanging out with Chip Kelly. |
