I don't see Hartnell fitting in there for too long either, which must be worrisome if you're a Jackets fan.
Foligno's gone soon, but they just signed Simon Hjalmarsson and Bjorkstrand/Rychel could potentially win spots, and Jenner and Calvert/Atkinson aren't going anywhere.
Chances are high that they could be stuck w/ a $4.75M 4th-line plug in the near future. - Tomahawk
hartnell will be a 3rd lin player there

this is a good day - we actually found a team to take Hartnell's terrible lengthy contract! and got better defensively and much less stupid penalties.
now if we can only get Vanek to play with Giroux! - MrBigglesworth
How about Vrbata at a lower cost and better defensively? |

well, thats only a fall back.
the real pipe dream is the lovely world of sports agency.
that will likely not be feasible.

He did kill the Habs in that one series years ago, they'd probably take that deal. |

I don't mean this in any mean way at all but imagine the Flyers with Simmonds, Emery and Subban. That would have to be the most brothers on one team ever. I actually think it would be awesome |

Well, his NMC is no longer applicable in Columbus (I believe), so it's not like they're really 'stuck' with him.
I'm sure someone knows the reality of the NMC thingy, and will be more than happy to educate me. |

Let’s take a trip back in time to the most recent, major trades that occurred on June 23rd:
June 23, 2011 – Flyers trade Jeff Carter to the Columbus Blue Jackets in exchange for Jakub Voracek, the eight pick in the 2011 NHL Draft (Sean Couturier) , and a third round pick (Nick Cousins)
June 23, 2011 – Flyers trade Mike Richards to the Los Angeles Kings in exchange for Wayne Simmonds, and Brayden Schenn
June 23, 2012 – Flyers trade James van Reimsdyk to the Toronto Maple Leafs for Luke Schenn
June 23, 2014 – Flyers trade Scott Hartnell to the Columbus Blue Jackets in exchange for R.J. Umberger and a fourth round pick in the 2015 NHL Draft

Look at the Kings. They have 4 lines all defensivly responsible. They all skate and play the system to a "T". Does anyone think that Hextall is trying to model that? Umberger fits the need of skating and solid D. Versatile. We need to see what else happens before we start calling for Hextalls head already |

FWIW, here is my take on the Hartnell deal:
First some facts, over the last 2 seasons Hartnell's aggregate stats are:
GP: 110 out of 130
G: 28, 13 on the pp, only 15 at ES
A: 35, 12 on the pp, 23 at ES
PTS: 63, 25 on the pp, 38 at ES
These numbers over 82 games average out to:
21 goals, 27 assists, 48 points.
For a guy who mainly plays with Giroux and Jake and sees heavy duty pp time, those are mediocre numbers.
Is Hartnell a better offensive player than Umberger? Yes
Is Umberger better defensively and more versatile? Yes
Now, if Hartnell only had 2 or 3 years on his deal left, I would hate this trade; but, since he has 5 years left, I can live with it. I certainly don't love it, but I can live with it. - BiggE

im not going to trot out stats or anything like this board is prone to battle over. just simply watching hartnell, there were troubling signs. his inability to get into the zone killed a ton of would be rushes for giroux. many of his shots appeared to be of the weaker, further away variety. he seemed to set up mainly in the slot more and hope that giroux could plant one on his stick as opposed to going to the gritty areas that made him as a player.
defensively, he was slipping all the more. bumping him down to the second would have been rough if it forced him and simmonds to be on the same line. simmonds is meh defensively too, but he at least brings now all of the things that hartnell used to to cancel it out.
harts still had SOME value for sure, but given the trend in performance coupled with his deal, it was going to turn hellacious fairly soon. i'm with you though in that maybe they shouldnt have even included umberger in the deal at all if need be. - stayinthefnnet
You nailed it. There is a huge difference between Hartnell of 3 years ago and the Hartnell now. Post Jagr, post new contract, post injury and post-Berube, he was simply not the same player we associate with that name, in both style of play and production. And the slope of the downward trend was very alarming. I was shocked to learn Hartnell did not have an injury after seeing him play in the Rangers series.
I think this trade means we now have, for the same salary (still too high) and less years (and thus more tradeable), maybe say 80% of the departed player in terms of offensive production (which is 2nd/3rd line) and one who will be twice as much defensively responsible, and an acknowledgement that the 1st line LW job is open, instead of trying to jam Hartnell in that position.
As for Hartnell being popular, he was the player most wanted out, according to the philly.com survey (almost 80% wanted him gone, and this was by far the worst numbers, worse even than VL).

I would like a moderately high paying, very low responsibility position pls. Like, if you could pay me to just post on hockeybuzz all day, that'd be grand. |
