Let's wait until he plays a couple of games for us. Who knows, he might've been traded before then. Also, motivation seems to be badly overlooked when looking at these kinds of trades (i.e. decent player wanting out). - PhillySteen
If there was cap saving in this deal to help improve the team in other areas I would have been fine with it. I'm not even a Hartnell fan.
This deal independent of itself did nothing to make the Flyers a better hockey club. Sure they got themselves out from the last two years of Hartnell's deal, but short term the Flyers are a better team with Scott Hartnell, then they are with RJ Umberger. |

No, I'll judge it now. It was a (frank)ing terrible decision and a terrible move. The Flyers traded their first line winger for a guy with an equally terrible contract. A first line winger for a guy who was going to be bought out. Wow. - Flyers1218
He's taking it very personal. It's only business, but he is taking it very personal. |

Was it first line wing? No that can't be right.. - Roytastic
I've gone back and forth on my thoughts about Hartnell over the years. But truth be told, the guy lost his spot to Raffl in mid-season. The guy lost his edge skating upteen times each week. I'm okay with the move. Because there is no spot the Flyers could play Hartnell off that top line -- and it looked like he didn't have the wheels to keep up with Voracek and Giroux.
(Way too slow for a second line role with Schenn/Lecavalier + Simmonds) and not really suited for a bottom-6 role.
I'm okay with the move. It's a lateral move -- fills the bottom six wing position -- and gives a very big opportunity for a player like B. Schenn to step up.

Pretty much a lock now that someone gives Niskanen 7 million per for at least 6 years. |

So it's okay that we're worse in the short term to maybe possibly be better in 3 years? So we're just throwing away the prime of Giroux's career so that maybe when he's 30 we'll be better off? - jmatchett383
If it's not likely we will win the cup, how is losing in the early rounds of the playoffs any less throwing away the prime years of Giroux's career? I'm hoping this is the start of a mini-rebuild. |

My best guess is that he really didn't like Berube's system and/or, he was still teed off bout losing his spot on the top line to Raffl for a month or 2. |

Exactly, I have no problem missing the playoffs next year if it makes us better off in the long run and gives a ticket to the McDavid sweepstakes. |

Edmonton had Griere, Laraque, and Anson Carter (and Sean Brown) at the same time, I think. - jmatchett383
Does that mean they should go after Evander Kane and Bufuglien (sp?) while they are at it? Gives new meaning to the orange and black? |

No, it means they should trade Giroux for a buyout candidate and a late pick before his long-term contract becomes an albatross. |

I'm sorry, I know that you all love the fact that we're going to be having salary cap savings in 3 years, but I hate this trade for a number of reasons and would prefer that we not just throw away 3 years to be better off in 4. |
