i can't backread nearly 40 pages.
i'm assuming the reactions are generally in the realm of "hextall is a terrible gm" and "hartnell was the greatest".
i'm fine with this move. strangely enough, i mentioned this exact move several weeks ago, but i never thought it would come to pass this way, meaning i expected the return of RJ, but not at the expense of hartnell. slight cap shavings, 2 less years, quicker, more versatile, much less stupid. the pick is a bonus. maybe they move it another deal, maybe they draft the next diamond in the rough with it. we shouldn't be so quick to dismiss a later round pick anymore. picks are gold.
i like it. good work, ron.

Wait Hartnell feels he will win more on the BJs then in Philly?
That makes me feel sick to my stomach.
Seriously, why was RJ in the doghouse? Anyone have something more intelligent then "he sucks." - coffee junkie
No, Jarmo thinks the Jackets can win more with Hartnell than Umburger |

he was injured? - Marc D
He just wasn't playing well in the coaches eyes. He was their shutdown center for a while, but Dubinsky took that role and ran with it.

It does. I'm sure Tampa fans were saying the same thing for Vinny. - Streit2ThePoint
It was probably a lot weirder for them. He was a Lightning for literally twice as long as Hartnell was a Flyer. |

this is probably all true, but the fact that VL is staying is sad
I hope he can bounce back but it seems unlikely - Marc D
hartnell still had some value, and look what his contract inflicted on the return. imagine VLs?

It opens up cap space. My concern is that Umberger isn't any better than a 4th liner. I feel like they could find a better 3rd/4th liner in FA for less money and less years.
The idea that this team is taking a step back to take a step forward isn't really true. They are taking 3 steps back and 2 steps forward with this trade. - PhillySportsGuy

Listen I know hartnell is the better and more skilled player. But not nearly by a long shot. I am thrilled when I can look at the flyers cap sheet and not see hartnell out to 2019.

I think most are OK with moving Hartnell but expected a better return or would have been happier with just Hartnell for a draft pick and cap space.

Between VL and Umberger, you're relying on two declining players who are coming off major injuries and very poor seasons. - PhillySportsGuy

Actually, Umberger mentioned a long list of injuries
From Columbus Dispatch, via Rotoworld:
As previously reported, Umberger had a separated shoulder, herniated disc, and broken finger. Umberger apparently started playing through the broken finger in early March, not aware that there was a break. It's only when the pain wasn't going away that they finally had a second X-Ray, which revealed a hairline fracture. His back problems were consistent throughout the season and got worse after the Olympic break. An MRI revealed a herniated disc, but it wasn't knocked out of the lineup until he separated his shoulder. Umberger missed the last four games as a result of that injury, but still managed to play in four of the Jackets' six postseason contests. He had 18 goals and 34 points in 74 contests in 2013-14. |

Goals don't tell the whole story. Umberger had his highest shooting percentage since his rookie season. Hartnell had one of his lowest. |

There was no good way to do it -- when you have tough contracts, you just don't get to walk away "clean."
Hartnell is 32 and had five years left on his deal. You aren't walking away from that singing and smiling and skipping and poop.
You are taking something back you don't want, or don't need, or is a risk. The league hasn't changed. People aren't taking your problems for free, and that's why I have been telling myself that Vinny is gonna be here
