He just wasn't playing well in the coaches eyes. He was their shutdown center for a while, but Dubinsky took that role and ran with it.
He just didn't play well. - PhillySportsGuy
He's survived really brutal F competition over the past few seasons... take his CF/FF w/ a grain of salt. |

Sorry. I don't really like the trade either. But I'm not sure I despise it. It does likely mean that Brayden Schenn stays, even if it is at LW |

Bellemare is signed, and Vinny hasn't been moved yet. Gotta account for those two. |

NHL.com did a redraft of 2009 and put Tomas Tatar ahead of Evander Kane, Brayden Schenn, and Tyson Barrie. |

that top 6 is damn good. cant have it everywhere haha - stayinthefnnet
I agree but the bottom six role players do not look promising to me. Sure we could add to it but if Vinny is next, I'm within the belief we are getting lesser offense and lesser players as a whole back. |

I guess I am just in the minority that thinks the move was ok. I see it as more a look at the whole picture. Umberger brings more versatility as hartnell was more of just an offensive player.
If hextall and berube are building a team predicated on skating and team defense then the move makes sense. I still think Vinny will be moved and possibly one dman.
LA just one a cup on a commitment in their own zone. I think the Flyers are looking to build in that way. Skating, Grit with discapline, attention to detail. |

Problem with the trade is the same one with the JVR for L Schenn deal in that the perceived value was not received.
4th round pick (no pick in JVR's case) -
3rd round pick -
2nd round pick -
Hartnell, when motivated, was able to play on the first line. Motivating him was part of the problem. Remember that at the start of the 11-12 season, he was on the 4th line because he earned it with his play during camp and the first 2 weeks of play. Injuries allowed him to be placed with Giroux and the 1st PP unit and he did respond with his best season. Last two years, not so much. We traded one of our problem contracts for one of theirs. I just would have thought that the net of the slightly better player vs. the two extra years was a 3rd or a 2nd, not a 4th.
Let's see what happens next. |

No! Everything must be judged this instant. I'm kind of in the indifferent category of this trade. Certainly not sad to see Hartnell's contract, and undisciplined penalties go, but I would have much preferred to gain cap space, instead of another aging, injured, player with a bad contract. Short term trade favors C-Bus, long-term I would say it favors the Flyers. |

right on. there were rumors the sabres would literally take bad deals for first round picks. - stayinthefnnet
Exactly -- you can't buy Vinny out. Too much term and the hits come in the wrong years, ie, when Couturier is up again
And paying to get rid of Vinny -- well, (frank). What if he would only waive for Florida, which was a team that might not have any use whatsoever? How much are you willing to pay to make a guy with four years left on his deal disappear who is 34 years old?
I think they were stuck with Vinny, Hartnell and Berube might not fit well, and Hextall knows that a 34-year-old Hartnell with an NMC might not be able to be moved at all.
So you do the best you can and move on |
